Does Congress have to approve all military actions taken by a President?

July 31st, 2010 by eranio

What if we are already at war and our military decides the use of nuclear weapons is needed? Does the military need an approval from Congress in which weaponry is used?

Can the President override Congress on military issues?

Does the CA guns laws violate our 2nd amendment rights?

July 31st, 2010 by eranio

I read somewhere that the founding fathers actually wanted citizens to have military grade weapons. CA laws do not let us have a clip that holds over 10 rounds and no assault rifles.

Why exactly do American citizens need automatic military style assault riffles?

July 31st, 2010 by eranio

I get why we have rifles for hunters,i get hand guns for protection (although i’m not a fan of them) But tell me why we need military style assault weapons in the hands of citizens?
I’m pretty much only a fan of rifles/shot guns for hunting or protection in the home. It’s kind of scary knowing that people everywhere are walking around the street with hand guns or own military style weapons.
LOL @ whip that was a pathetic answer! No one needs automatic military style weapons unless you’re breaking the laws that barely hold this country together
I support the right to bare arms but not military assault "spray the area" type of weapons
this isn’t the old days the government isn’t going to come after you and murder you and your family for not paying your taxes….. there’s no need for them

Is the US Military in shambles?

July 31st, 2010 by eranio

I’m going to list reasons:

1. Our defense program has numerous weapons that look like perpetual money trees for the military industry. How long has the F-22, F-35, XM-8 gun and other weapons been in development? How does it take 10-20 years to get one weapon out? Microsoft can make a new Xbox system with less flaws than your typical military weapon in a couple years. This just tells me these weapons are pork. Ever notice the real weapon systems are never announced and just come out like a surprise?

2. Iraq has just torn apart our equipment and morally exhausted the soldiers. Even the most patriotic are starting to wonder what the point of being there is.

3. Most decent people wouldn’t serve in the military because most of their fellow recruits are the bottom of the barrel of society. Moreover, people won’t even join anymore because they don’t want to die or lose their limbs in Iraq.

4. All the weapons cost a gazillion dollars to fix, which is insanely impractical.

the US spends more money on military than the next 15 countries. Combined. Canada’s military is a joke. It’s like comparing a nuke to a squirt gun.

How can I show or sell a product to a US military procurement official?

July 31st, 2010 by eranio

I am a graduate student from India attending graduate school in the US. Part of my research involves new methods of computer and gyroscopic stabilization and aiming mechanisms for devices that need to sit absolutely still while in operation, and devices that must aim at small targets from a distance.

I have also done research on my own. I am trying to develop a stabilized platform for military applications, but I need more funding for the production and research. I am close to building a device that could stabilize and auto-aim a firearm for any purpose. For example, this device will guide a fired round to its targert with far greater accuracy than any human marksman, and can be pre-set to fire at a certain time or a certain number of times at the same target, or can be programmed to search for different targets. It will weigh as little as 5kg.

How can I contact a US military procurement officer for information on sales contracts and acquisitions? This is a good product.

where did the term "battle rifle" come from?

July 31st, 2010 by eranio

I ask because there are some people that use the term to describe a type of weapon (the same way you would call a Colt SAA a revolver or the M1 Garand a semi-automatic rifle).

I’ve always understood the term to mean a rifle used by the military, as opposed to a hunting or sporting rifle.

Got any ideas for a good shooter game with nice real weapons – rifles, snipers and pistols?

July 30th, 2010 by eranio

Something like Battlefield but maybe more complex :D
FEAR is very nice but there aren’t real rifles or snipers.
Hitman has nice weapons but it’s too complex…
Counter Strike is nice too but now is old.

Just saying maybe you understand what I am looking for.

In as few words as possible, what do you think should be the law(s) about GUN CONTROL in the USA?

July 30th, 2010 by eranio

Guns for sport and hunting by license and rigorous background check only. Lots of rules about when they can be used, how to store them, etc.

Harsh penalties for misuse.

No guns for criminals!

No high powered military assault rifles. No machine guns.

Handguns should also have severe limits.

What’s your take on this?

Has the US Military considered selling AKM parts kits?

July 30th, 2010 by eranio

A lot of old ComBloc countries chop up AKM assault rifles and sell them to the United States civilian markets as parts kits to build legal rifles off of with American made receivers and some parts replaced. Just some background there.

My question is. Has the US Military considered doing this?
They are always uncovering a cache of small arms here and there. They capture them from insurgents and I am sure Saddam had some big stockpiles of AKMs.
Couldn’t they have all the recovered rifles send to a central facility, and get the receivers cut so they could be shipped here?
It could provide funding for the war, jobs for Iraqis and make those of us here at home very happy since parts kits have become so much more expensive/harder to find recently.

Has this been considered? What do you think of the idea?

Why is the US military so advanced in some areas of technology, but so behind in other areas?

July 29th, 2010 by eranio

I have a little experience with this trend, since I did some technology development for the military of India before coming to the US. People ask me what the Indian military is like. What can I say? In some ways, it’s "f’d up like a soup sandwich!" In others, it is much better than you’d expect a third-world military to be. The main problem is lack of money. So, there are still guys running around the jungle with WWII rifles and vintage Brownings while our nuclear arsenal is being miniaturized.

For example, we developed millimetre-band radar technology for the Indian military. Not just active denial systems and scanners, but also air defence systems, new classes of AESA scanners, miniature AESA devices, counter-SEAD protocols and systems, and even antisatellite and missile knockdown systems. All right there in India. This is public info; I’m not giving anything away by noting this.

The US military has much more money, and better technology in many areas, but it still seems that technology is not being used to its full power. For instance, one of our projects – in India – was to develop a remote-scanning heuristics system for road side bombs. Basically, all explosive devices have certain "unnatural" characteristics which distinguish them from bomb-free landscapes, and the task is to build a computer system which can identify most such devices in a variety of terrains, using a number of scanning and comparative technologies. Good progress was underway by the time I left.

So if we were developing such systems in India, the US must already have such systems, and they must already be deployed. So it makes me frustrated whenever I read news about soldiers killed by a roadside explosive device. To some extent, that MUST be a failure of the military to apply available technology.

You see, Afghanistan is a huge problem for India, because we need those "militants" dead. Those maniacs keep setting off bombs and attacks within India. So I just wonder why the US military does not use its technology to the full extent possible, even if the tech is experimental. Soldiers should not be killed by IED or road side bomb in this age.
"You could have perfect detection of differences in terrain, but you would never detect the IED buried in a culvert under the road"

Sure you can. In fact, that’s fairly simple; even a hobbyist can purchase an off-the-shelf groundscan system.
