I like to collect weapons, and I like the M16 military rifle so I am wondering if I can get one legally

it depends what state you are in; in california it is illeagal to own automatic weapons ,but you can get them it justs cost alot of money, time, and paper work. if you dont want to go through all of that then just buy the ar15 it is the samething just without full auto

If you want a ‘full auto’ model, you need a rather expensive federal permit to own a ‘machine gun’.
If you want a ‘semi auto’ or ‘civilian’ version, in MOST places in the U.S. these are legal. (SOME states are, I believe trying to make even these illegal.) Check your local firearm regulations.

I note that SOME ‘civilian’ weapons are ALSO used by the military, mostly knives and handguns.
