Are tactical sniper rifles illegal to own?

November 11th, 2009 by eranio

I was wondering if sniper rifles fell under the class III or whatever category. Or is it easier to get like a handgun? Thanks for all the help in advance! =]

The kind I’m talking about is the m40a3 and the likes.

That depends on where you are. However, there is no federal ban on such rifles yet. In general, long guns such as rifles and shotguns are less restricted than handguns. Bolt-action and single shot firearms are also generally less restricted than semi and full auto firearms.

You should have no issues in getting such a rifle barring any stupid laws by local authorities.

You can own a bolt action rifle. No big deal.

    that’s basically a bolt action .308. legal.

no, all gun laws are unconstitutional and I can show you how to sue anyone who infringes your federal civil liberties. and take their house away from them too.

wouldn’t it be uber-cool if conservatives just started suing liberal lunatics in federal court and turned them into homeless bums!

No, you can own pretty much whatever you can afford right now.

"Sniper rifle" is like "Assault Weapon", they are just normal guns that have been given an undeserved name.

-Any rifle can be a sniper rifle(with options)

Depends. The laws vary from one jurisdiction to another. The weapons you’re talking about are pretty expensive. You can turn any rifle into a sniper’s rifle. It ain’t the gun, after all, that makes a successful sniper – it’s the shooter. And that means practice – lots and lots of practice. Any Marine can tell you that!

As long as it isn’t fully automatic, and you aren’t a felon or have a domestic violence conviction, you can own any firearm manufactured.
