Are there any long-range sniper rifles that are around $1000 to $2000?

March 10th, 2010 by eranio

I’ve been looking for a long range sniper rifle, and I’ve had my heart set on the Chey-Tac Intervention M200. Much to my disappointment, it was the same price of a used car (around ,000 USD). A Barrett M82/M107 was at least K cheaper than that?

Anyway, I’ve been looking around for a long-range sniper (or similar-looking) rifle that may be chambered for any round, but has a similar appearance and/or barrel length to the CheyTac Intervention or a Barrett. I was thinking about bolt actions, since semi-autos jammed more often, but I don’t know.

Thanks for answering!
BTW, I live in California, and I’m pretty familiarized with their rather annoying laws.

You can reach out to a 1000 meters with a 308, but the new boy on the block is the .338 Lapua Magnum.

The rifle you want to look at is the SAKO TRG-42 chambered in the .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge. The rifle should run you just under $3000 without any bells or whistles (no glass).

Another long rang shooter in the 338 Lapua cartridge is the Accuracy International AWSM (Arctic Warfare Super Magnum). This baby will set you back just under $6,000 (no glass).

Another long range shooter is the McMillan TAC-50. You can get this in 308 or 50 cal. Price for the 308 is just under $5,000 (no glass).

When you start getting into long range shooting, the price goes up exponentially. The only rifles you will be able to afford in the $1000 to $2000 dollar range will be in the 308 caliber. You can start off with a Remington 700 and build from there. Get the rifle and then buy the glass. That will take up your entire $2,000. Then when funds become available start accurizing the weapon.

Remember the glass (your scope) is going to cost you as much, if not more than your rifle if you want to reach out to distances that far. You are going to plopping down at least $1000 or more just for the glass. You will want to look at Leupold, Zeiss, Schmidt & Bender, Night Force, US Optics or Unertl. You will need at least a 12 power scope, but should probably go with a 16 power.

So, are there any long range sniper rifles out there for around $1,000 to $2,000? Yes. You can purchase a Remington 700 and build it over time as the funds become available.

Well im from Texas and its pretty easy to accquire a good long-range ‘sniper’ rifle. Personally anything over 26′inches that is a bolt action rifle can be considered a sniper rifle. USMC uses a remington 700 bolt action rifle with a custom digital acu pattern on the mcmillian stock. That is an excellent rifle that with a decent scope(3×9-50) will do the trick at shooting up to 800 yards. The newest rifle the USMC uses the M40A5 bolt-action rifle. Good luck with your decision, son.

    1. That depends on what YOU consider "long range."
    2. ANY rifle used by a sniper IS a "sniper rifle."

That said, check the ballistics of various cartridges and then find a weapon that uses the cartridge you decide on.
In part, your choice should depend on WHAT you intend on shooting.

Examples: I use .220 swift for varmints to 1000 yards; .308 on deer, antelope, elk to 300 yards; 30-06 for deer, elk, bear to 400 yards; AND, 45-70 (with BP cartridges) or .50 BP for general shooting to 1000 yards+ (usually targets or large game).

It depends more on the SHOOTER’S proficiency WITH the weapon, than the weapon used.

M1A is a decent long range target rifle. $1500 to $2200.
shoots .308/7.62 nato. effective to 1000 yards

there is a .416 Barrett rifle caliber, a local store has it for $2200. single shot, bolt action. similar to the .50 bmg but a bit smaller bullet. looks like a single shot .50 BMG rifle.
