Assault Rifle facts and shooting capabilities?
I have been asked to find out some research about Assault Rifles for a theatre project, more specifically the MP5. Could anyone tell me some info about the MP5?
Also, what is the MP5 like for firing long range? Are assault rifles dangerous to fire over long range when trying to cover say another person?

The MP5 is a relatively short range weapon. It fires the 9mm pistol cartridge and thus is limited in effectiveness due to the limits of the round.
The MP5 is actually considered a sub-machine gun, not an assault rifle because it uses a pistol cartridge. It’s a great weapon for law enforcement but when it comes to combat. I would leave it behind.
Maximum effective range is only about 100 yards. I would not carry anything that was less than 300 yards.
Except in the jungle, then I carried a 12ga shotgun.

Do you mean the military MP5 or the US civillian version?
The MP-5 is a machine pistol (meaning it fires pistol rounds rather than rifle rounds). It fires 800 rounds/minute. The max range is 150 m which is indicative of the inherant inaccuracy of the gun/ammunion (after that range you are unlikely to hit a target). It fires a 9mm round, but variants were produced that fire a 0.40 inch round (10 mm) different parts of the world have different standard bullet sizes.
It’s purpose is for close city fights where range is unlikely to present a problem, and it’s important to be able to turn your muzzle quickly.
However, the MP-5s sold in the US are nothing like that. The MP-5s you’ll find are all semi automatic (meaning one trigger pull one bullet and a rate of fire peaking at perhaps 120/min if you’re very well trained). The effective range and cartridge specs don’t change.
I’m not sure what you mean dangerous to fire over long range when trying to cover another person. Cover fire is normally done to allow someone to keep an opposing shooter down while someone sneaks into a better shot location (not generally into the firing area). So,
C”””””’S
””””A””|
””””A”S
E
In my little picture C might lay down cover fire to prevent E from seeing/preventing S as he moves forward of an Auto(A). Does that make more sense? The apostrophes are just to space the picture out.

Rotorhead is right the MP5 is a sub machine gun not an assault rifle. The MP5 is a short range weapon that fires pistol ammunition, 9mm Luger. Yeah, Rotorhead Charley had great respect for the 12 gauge in the jungle.

Rotorhead is right, the MP5 is not an assault rifle, it is a sub machine gun that fires a pistol caliber round. It is not useful for any long distance shooting. It is primarily used by law enforcement and some military special forces teams. It is an excellent weapon for close quarters battle, things like clearing a house or building or a ship or some other confined space. This is because its carries a lot of rounds and has fast rate of fire, easy muzzle control and its small size makes it very manueverable in tight spaces.

The MP5 was produced in 9mm versions to cover entry and sweep type missions. Very maneuverable and compact. Lightweight and easy to handle do to the slight recoil of the 9mm round. Definitely not a long range weapon for any means. comes in as a sub-machine gun. Fires a lot of rounds very rapidly out of a short barrel. Was made in a pistol model as well. couple even had collapsible stocks for easier carry.
Assault rifles can be fired over long ranges accurately with the correct set-up. If you look at some of the Camp Perry shoot files in youtube you can find a lot of long range shooting done with assault rifles. Depending on what you want to look at. You can check out Cheytec .408 in youtube as well. Not really a assault weapon but specifically made for military action. The Cheytec leads the way in Assault weapons for covering targets at long ranges.
