USA only right?
The Thompson was only good at very close range. A German Mauser could pick you off easily at 100 yards and you couldn’t hit a barn at that range. Crappy combat gun.
The M1 Carbine was not at all accurate at range either, and if you could hit the enemy he’d still be able to kill you. It was a weak pea-shooter in combat, worse than the Thompson.
The M16 ranks up there, however it is not a sub-machine gun. It fires a too small round and it is very prone to jamming in the field.
The Springfield was the second best bolt action rifle in the major World wars, problem is, it’s a clone of the best bolt action rifle, the Mauser K98. Still, in .30-06, it was a fine long range rifle, probably better than the Win 70 or Rem 700 that were just cheaper, lighter commercial copies.
The M4 is just a modified AR. It does not count as it’s own rifle, just a short M16.
Probably among the best rifle was the M1 Garand. More ammo, faster loading, hard hitting and tough. It was improved to the selective fire .308 shooting M14, where the platform was perfected.
So my choice is the full auto-capable, magazine fed M14. It’s a true rifle and not some nancy-boy "spray-and-pray" lightweight carbine shooting peas. Capable of killing a man at 500 yards, or clearing out a room full of Commies.
The Colt 1911 .45acp was adopted before WWI, so it was used until the 1980s when replaced by the Beretta 92. Also, many .38special revolvers were used by US troops in WWI and WWII.

I don’t know what the question is but… M16 and M4 are the best assault rifles on that list xD
WWI, WWII, Vietnam, and Korea was the Colt 1911 .45
Currently is the M9 Berretta… Very nice gun xD

I think the US used the model 1911 .45 handgun since ww1 and through Vietnam and even into the gulf war. now they use the Beretta .9mm.
As for rifles I think the M1 garand was the best.

pistols in world war one to vietnam was the 1911A1 colt 45 auto, since the mid 80s it has been the Beretta 92, called the M9 by the military.
Certain special units have different handguns
Best guns of all time? The M16 was revolutionary, in some ways similar to the AK and Stg, but in others (modularity, plastic, .22 cal high velocity projectile) it was quite new. M1 carbine was fine but not best, Thompson SMG was hard hitting and very controllable, but the open bolt caused some issues. It isn’t head and shoulders above the competition, nor that revolutionary, good but not great. Springfield rifles were just slightly modified mausers, so they don’t get the nod, winchester 70 and remington 700 by themselves are nothign special, you put a special man behind them to see stellar results. M4 is just a shorty M16.
So M16, after the kinks were worked out

it depends what you consider best. an AK-47 has one of the worst known accuracys, but will always work no matter how many times you drop it in mud or dirt or water. the most accurate semi-auto rifle in history is the M14. the most accurate bolt action is the Remington 700. M1 garands are heavy, and you cant reload until youre out, but can be decently accurate. M4s vs. M1s are 2 totally different carbines. M4s are only full auto, while the M1 carbine is semi. if the M1 was better, why does it get replaced. the thompson was a beast, it shot .45, but you dont want to lug it around. it also depends on the purpose. the best all around rifle is an M14, or a M16, but they get very pricy. theyre an investment though. if you hold onto any of these rifles for more than lets say 5 years, and keep them in top notch quality, youll make money.

The M-14 in 7.62×51 NATO. Best non-American military rifle: FN FAL, also in 7.62×51 NATO.

first off, the m-1 carbine wasn’t a submachine gun, the m-16 is not a preferred sniper rifle, and the springfield is not a 1901 but a 1903. that being said, the thompson was the preferred submachine gun for nco’s during ww2 and korea and in some cases vietnam. it fires the .45 acp round that is very devastating. you know when you’ve been hit by that bullet. the m-1 carbine was a good rifle despite what some say. it doesn’t have the range of a m-1 garand but is very useful in close quarters battle.
the 1903 springfield was an excellent rifle with a tremendous range of up to 500 meters and then some depending on the shooter. it uses the very capable .30-06 vs. the .308 (7.62×51 nato) that the remington 700 or the winchester 70 uses. as far as the m-4 goes, its a piece of crap. i hate it with a passion. its just a smaller version of the m-16, with all the m-16′s problems. it won’t fire if it gets the smallest amount of dust in it, tends to jam or double feed, and is not very accurate after 250 meters.
the pistol that was used during ww1, ww2, korea and vietnam was the beloved springfield m1911 in .45 acp. we now use the much hated m9 beretta in 9mm that is for purposes a worthless handgun. in desert storm and in oif 1 and now oef, i have used this pistol with much chagrin. it is very inaccurate beyond 25 meters, and the trigger pull is way too much, around 12 lbs. i have seen the enemy get hit 4 times with this pistol and still get up and move. i can’t wait for the new sidearm to finally get here. from what i here it will be either an HK or a sig-sauer in .45 acp.

The S&W model 10 revolver and the M16 would top the list in my opinion.
