Best military surplus rifle?

January 21st, 2010 by eranio

OK, I really want a cool military surplus rifle. I originally wanted an m1 carbine, but the ammo is way to expensive. I want a good rifle for under 350$ and it should have relatively cheap ammo. it can be bolt action or semi-auto.

You really need to provide more direction.

US weapons are generally more expensive than Imported Military Surplus which you have already noted with the M1 Carbine, M1 Garand is around $1000+.

On the Import side which I collect the prices vary from ~$100 for a Russian Mosin Nagant 91/30, M44 or M38 (bolt action) to over $800 for like a Russian SVT-40 (semi-auto), both shoot 7.62x54R which are easy to purchase online.

Swiss MilSurp are typically around $250-$500, bolt action with a 7.5×55, a more expensive round than 7.62x54R.

Enfields are another selction, typically in 303 but once in a while you can find the 7.62×51 NATO (not 308 win). Rounds are a somewhat expensive and not always easy to get.

Yugoslavia, Russian, Romanian (any country brand of SKS)SKSs are another good choice but high in my opinion because of the political environment but $250-$350 for Yugo, Rom in a little higher and $400-$500 for a Russian. Don’t forget the Chinese version too. These use the very common and cheap 7.62×39 rounds.

You also have a huge asortment of K98s, Mausers, Zv24 (bolt actions) that vary from $150 to $500.

Prices all vary depending on condition. You also have the FAL, CETME, Dragunovs which are out of the price range you listed.

Good place to check with an assortment, Impact Guns. http://www.impactguns.com/store/surplus_military_guns.html

I would say an SKS. Here is Texas they are relatively cheap, ammo is plentiful and they are easy and fun to shoot. I have two, and go to the range often with them, as well as use them as a brush gun in the wood. Easy to carry, fun and cheap. the ideal "plinker"

good luck with good and under 350 dollars. You should look at spending 1000 + or – for good surplus. M1903s, some M14s or M1As, AR15s, Enfields and M1 Garands etc.

The cheap bolt action route goes in the Mauser, or Mosin Nagant route.

Cheap semis are the AK 47 Clones.

.30carbine ammunition is way too expensive for you? You might be better off ditching the surplus rifle idea and just buying a .22. You can get 500 rounds for about $20.
