I am planning to buy an m16a2 but I will soon be moving to virginia. I need to see if I can take it with me before I buy one.

Yes you can buy one if you can legally own a firearm. Also the process is much easier if you already have a pistol permit. At least it is in my state.

But you don’t have to have a class 3 weapons permit. It can be used to get one but you can also fill out a transfer and pay the tax stamp for a full auto. This may sound easy but its not. Also a full auto m16 at the cheapest is around $16,000 because there is a limited supply of legal full auto guns that are pre 1986. 1986 is the year that all new full auto weapons could not be made for civilian use. But this is not what they were asking.

Yes. Virginia does not have any special restrictions concerning this as long as you are capable of purchasing the firearm. If it is full auto, you must have a class 3 firearms license.

If they’re available where you live now, sure. Or, you could wait until you get to Virginia. They still have some respect for the duty to keep and bear arms there. That applies if it’s a semi-auto copy.
Now, if it’s a true M16A2, with the three-round burst feature, be prepared for tons of paperwork to be able to get it.
