Can people in the military modify their weapons/gear?
Are they allowed to customize their rifles or buy their own handguns, and knives and what not? Or do they have to use whats issued to them?
If no then why are guns and accessories (Hi-cap mags, etc.) commonly sold for "military use"?
How can someone buy "military use only" gear if their not in the military? You don’t know what you’re talking about do you?
There are restrictions on certain things (Hi-Cap mags, certain weapons, etc.) that you need a military ID to purchase…Duh.

Rifle sights are a bit iffy, it’d depend on your unit’s policies. Nothing permanent, of course.
Personal firearms? Big no no.
Knives? Utilitarian clasp knives and Swiss Armies Knives (boy, do I love ‘em!) would be alright, but if you attached a big combat knife to your webbing you’d be told to take it off.
Guns and magazines sold for "military/police" use only – usually, this means that only a military as a whole can buy them. For instance, FN Herstal will only sell their Five-Seven pistol to a police force or military’s armories, but not to members of a police of military in particular.
Some items can be bought by military/police members individually, but it’s often only special forces who’ll be allowed to use them on the job.

In combat they have to use what is issued to them…everybody has the same weapon so that they are able to be interchangeable in event of their weapon failing, and to ensure that each soldier is safe.
All those things you mentioned are simply advertised that way to make them more desireable to the firearms enthusiasts…and in truth, the term "military use" can mean absolutely anything…Im sure the White Extremists class themselves as militants.

gear yes, weapons, no. we have on quite a few occasions, added to or took off something that were issued to us in the fact that it was useless or got in the way. as far as weapons go, absolutely not. you use what is issued to you. you are not allowed to bring or purchase a civilian weapon for use in combat. the high capacity mags are for use by the military and the police only due to goverment regulations. that’s why on most of the newer mags it states "gov’t use only".

Yes you can. Not suppose to, but you can.

Modifying your weapon depends on the unit you are in. Most will let you put an optic, light or the sling you want to use one, but much more than that and you’d have to talk to the armorer. As for knives the size depends on your unit but other than that you can use any knife you want. I have never used the MOLLE vest that was issued to me and always used my own purchased one without any one caring. Hi capacity magazines are not restricted to just military/LEO in every state. I know that in the state that I and my parents live there is no restrictions on the capacity of a magazine that a private citizen may own and/or use.
