Can Servicemen keep rifles they found during combat?

February 11th, 2010 by eranio

I have heard that folks in the military are able to keep enemy weaponry that they had picked up during their time in combat. Within reason obviously, like sidearms and some rifles (AK’s, etc.). Is this true?

No, they search you, your belonging, and your vehicles before shipping back. Don’t get caught smuggling these items back

First guy has it,it is a shame that you can’t bring stuff back like they did in ww2.Closest thing to a weapon we had guys bring back were ak bayonets, and that required some paper work.

I wish. I would love to have kept an RPK or an SVD, both of which we found in quantity. But no.

Up until the last gulf war many tried and failed. It was a huge problem and got caught doing it. Some units did get some things justified and brought them home for display in front of the unit but from I understand it was a night mare. I know that even a lot of vehicles also ran into this crazy mess. We in fact got two sent too my unit in HI.
As for the weapons fire pins were removed and the barrel had to be filled with lead or metal to which completely and totally makes it worthless and nonoperational which is the idea behind it all. I know many wanted to show them off but they ruined it.
But yea there was a time many did bring things back, Had a Uncle bring back a German Luger with rounds from ww1. Will not tell how or what they told all of us but it was an interesting one to say the least.
Also the WW2; after taken of Okinawa all or as many as could be collected samurai swords taken into the deep blue and never seen again. I suspect some did show up because of the novelty of them. They were a prize then as they are now.

Yes they can…if that firearm qualifies as an antique and is not considered a war trophy (in others you paid for it).

For instance, you find an 1870 Len Enfield on a patrol and you offer to buy it from the man who owns it.

No!!!!!!! You can go to jail over that! No weapons of any sort can be kept! In the old days they use to do that, but that is no longer the case, in order to keep something that you got from the war, 1st it has to be established that their isnt a rightfull owner, 2nd not of any value of the country and 3rd a lawyer must tell you if you are able to bring it back. People sometimes try and sneak it back with Army equipment but that is tricky since customs inspects all items leaving the desert.

No. But individual units can, and they usually have the firing pin removed and placed in a unit, battalion, brigade, or post museum. We usually only get articles of clothing, knives, and equipment such as canteens, boots, etc. Then, that takes a LOT of paperwork anyway.

No way. During my era they would take the AK-47′s and cut the barrel off with a torch and throw them overboard, etc. I know of people during WWII who brought German sidearms home. You can’t do that now.

I know it would be great if you could.
