can you choose equipment in the military?

December 28th, 2009 by eranio

i keep hearing stuff like you can choose what weapon you use or that you can use your own firearms or scopes or whatever you want in certain parts of the military like S.E.A.L.s or rangers or whatever, i think most of it is probably bull but is any of it true? is there any part of the armed forces where you can choose stuff like that?

Only special units can. Most military members cannot modify their weapon or use civilian weapons.
I was an Armorer for 2 years. If yo modified your weapon and tried to turn it in to the Arms-room, I would make you fix it or write you up for the repairs

No, it’s nothing like that. Whatever your Sergeant tells the class to use, you guys use. You can’t just pick what weapon you want to use.. If you want to do that get a hunting license and buy a gun you like.

    Hope I helped,

I know that Green Berets get to choose their guns and stuff. I would think some special forces get to.

No, you don’t choose your weapons. You receive training on the weapons you will be expected to use.

There are times people chose their weapons. In Vietnam, the standard side arm was the M1911A1 ACP pistol. Pilots were given a lot of discretion. Some carried big knives. The most important thing was air crew didn’t like carrying the big .45 caliber side arm. Most carried a .38 Colt revolver. This eventually became the standard side arm for Marine air crew.
