How does one buy a civilian version assault rifle, and where do I go to learn how to shoot it?

Basically, I am afraid of a SHTF situation erupting in the next few years. I would feel more comfortable having a civilian version assault rifle to protect the family at a distance (I already have close quarters situation handled). Do most gun shops have civilian assault rifles chilling in the back room and willing to train you for a little money?

I know when you cock a handgun it pulls the hammer back and when u press the trigger it releases the hammer that strikes the back of the bullet which ignites the gun powder. But how does a pistol get cocked by istself if you don’t cock the slide. And also same thing with an automatic assault rifle. How does it shoot continueasley?

I’ve heard that my friend went down at a flee market and he found a M4 Carbine that is Spring and Battery powered that shoots pellets not BB’s… i want to buy one off the internet cause theres no flee market where i live and i cant find one…. all i find is BB’s shooters and Co2, and i don’tt like any of them

I have been looking up online on getting a gun or two and get a collection started. I am currently looking at civilian version of the M4, it’s a semi-automatic and as far as I know, a full auto assault rifle is illegal? That’s besides the point. I am wondering the following.
