Could you see the US Military switching to a rifle with a bullpup design in the nearish future?

Something like the L85 or AUG. Maybe one with a heavier round like the 6.8 mm Remington.

Also, I don’t play video games so don’t call this a CoD question.
I am talking about the next 10 or so years.
I don’t think money should be considered much of a concern as we do account for about half of the worlds total military spending at 700 billion US dollars
Xeno, I believe you mean XM-8 as I can find no references to MX-8 anywhere, and that is neither bullpup nor .308 caliber, this may not be a CoD question but that was a CoD answer.
What?, Thats not what I meant, we have the best funded military the world over, if we want to switch to a bullpup rifle we can even if it does cost a bit more than an M16. China, the UK, Australia, and France have all switched and all have much less funding than we do.
Also, sarcasm sure as hell isn’t going to help illustrate your point, its just so f*cking annoying.

I think the MX-8 has been in design for some time. It shoots a .308 and there will be a rifle, carbine, and some kind of pistol version.

Well they’re replacing the M249 SAW with …. the M27 IAR because of how old and heavy the SAW is. Actually, thats just the Marines. But I think the military already has some bullpup designs in use. Not as common as the M4 and such. But hey, Anything’s possible.

    Hey man, I’m UK.

I think it would be good if your country did as the SA80A2 seems to be doing very good for us.

But the M-16 seems very reliable, and is cheaper to make, so I doubt they would bother using research.

I like the Bullpup system, because it’s so easy to carry and is a better weapon to handle. I’ve never used an m-16 or even the SA80 as I’m not actually in the army, yet. but I’m judging off what my friends say about the gun lol.

    Hope I helped.

  4. what?

Adopting a bullpup? Possible, but I wouldn’t bet on it. Replacing the M-16 seems impossible. Too much inertia. On top of that, there isn’t a whole lot of affection for bullpup designs in the US in general.
But the M-16 wasn’t popular when it replaced the M-14 either, so never say never.

But adopting a new caliber? No way. Never gonna happen – well, not in the next decade, at least.
5.56 NATO is the standard round because America lobbied for it. It would take billions of dollars just for the US to change calibers, and then many more billions for the rest of NATO to make the change, as well. Making a change would require new rifles, new magazines, new ammo stock… And it would take the US out of conformity with foreign allies, unless we offered to foot the bill for the rest of NATO as well.

EDIT: You’re right – money is irrelevant. That’s why the Air Force is getting all the F-22′s they want, and isn’t stuck keeping cargo planes from the 1950s as their main system.
Wait…what’s that? You say the Raptors aren’t being procured after all? And that the C-130 is still the workhorse of all branches, even though it was designed in 1954?
Hmm, maybe you’re not right. Maybe in a capitalist society, money DOES matter, after all.

  5. Evolve or become extinct

It took them 45 years to drop the M16 for the M4 and its still the same action and same round. Sounds like they are hooked on the .223 and the original Colt action.

  6. MAN your man could smell like

    Not really, here’s why:
    A) The US military already has a firearm they like and advance based on that.
    B) The firearm is interchangeable with a lot of stuff and is universal for them.
    C) It’s a lot cheaper to produce.
    D) The round they use is already mass produced, they have a LOT of them on the shelf ready for war or practice and lots of them.
    E) Switching takes more time and money than the politicians want to spend (since who the frick cares about defense when we could be spending on mindless crap?).

i do not think there is any chance what so ever of the US adopting a bullpup design.

the bullpups have been around since the 1980′s and the US has never shown even the slightest interest in them, about 5 years ago it was mooted around that a replacement for the M16/M4 was needed, they asked various weapons designers/manufacturers to submit ideas for a rifle that will take the US into the next 30 years, not one bull pup design was submitted (mainly because the military asked for a rifle ‘like the M16′ only better.

they spent the last 5 years trailing various rifles, the Scar even got combat trails with a ranger batt in iraq, but it appears they have decided to just keep upgrading the current M16 platforms,
