Current US Military Assault Rifle?

January 18th, 2010 by eranio

I was talking with a friend and I believed that the current US Military Assault Rifles are the M16A2 & the M16A4, as well as the M4 Carbine. He is a slow one and I would love to beat it in his skull but to prove it since he is in my house I said I would publicly ask, are those two rifles the main issue to soldiers right now? (The M16A2 is being phased out)

The M16A2 is being phased out but is still very common in the military as it is being replaced by the A4; the M4 is also issued so all three are in use today. The phasing in of weapons is always done over extended periods of time for money reasons. Example is the M1 Garand was adapted officially by the military in the early to mid 1930′s but the Springfield was still the carried rifle by many units until 1942 to early 43; the M16 replaced the M14 officially in 1965 but it was only commonly seen in Vietnam as most US and European based units kept the M14 until the early 1970′s….we should have kept it period but politics ruled.

The M16A2 is being phased out. The M16A4 is mostly in combat units right now with the M4.

Generally it starts with Infantry, Artillery Observers and Scouts, then spreads out to the others.

Usually your supply units will be the last to have them issued. A lot of times even the Guard starts to see them before a lot of supply units.
