Do all US military members carry arms while on base?

January 10th, 2010 by eranio

I was wondering- while someone’s (it doesn’t matter which branch) deployed in a foreign country/living on base (even in the US) do they carry guns with them? Are all military members even issued guns?

Not on regular bases…Weapons are kept in the armory..Only guards at the armory or MP’s will be armed on a regular base not in a war zone.

if they are in a combat zone.. yes they do have an assigned weapon!!

if it’s not a combat zone, the only weapon is the issued weapon, stored in the unit arms room.. for qualification and MOUT training.. for the most part.

Most foreign countries that the US military is assigned to, it’s illegal to bring personally owned weapons to that country..

Depends on which branch and what MOS. Not all military members carry guns with them, but all are trained in weaponry.

Weapons are within reach at all times in a combat zone, at least when I served (Army) . In CONUS they are locked up and guarded in garrison.

For the record, a shooting iron is referred to as a weapon, a piece, a rifle or pistol, but never a gun. A gun is a large caliber weapon generally 20mm or larger that is crew served. It is also a derogatory term for a male sex organ.

No. Only if the job requires it.
And issued a weapon only if in hostile territory when possibility of hostilities do exist.

I should note though, that before the USAF combined the three commands, MAC, TAC and SAC into AMC and ACC, we who were assigned to the flight line and were in the SAC had to carry side arms even at home. SAC was the bomber command and those as you know were mostly Nuclear at the time so no chance was taken. After the combined commands and fall of Soviet Union, the need to carry side arms disappeared.

For me they issued me a gun that they kept locked up in an armory the entire time I was deployed to Iraq, but I’m in the Air Force and never left the base.

no in the air force or at least for my husband he doesnt carry a gun at work..he is issued a gun before he deploys which he must turn in with all ammo accounted for when he returns to his base..we lived overseas and again he did not have a gun..only in a war zone

NO. MP’s carry side arms, some guards are armed. The only time I saw guy’s ready for major combat were the grunts guarding the nuke bunkers at Fliegerhorst Kaserne FRG while doing 27 months there. Those guy’s had 3 bandoleers and grenades when they marched to the site.

I once pulled armed guard at Ft. Gordon. We were given 3rounds. They were kept in one pouch, the empty magazine was in the other pouch. If the rounds were not still on the clip we were in DEEP serious trouble. The finance office was guarded with a shotgun because a guard had been overpowered and his M16 stolen.

Only in combat zones or an MP on duty or special guards.
