Yep you have to give it back. In fact everytime you PCS, move to a different base, you will be issued a different weapon. So you will never have the same weapon your whole military career.
If you want a weapon to keep, you will have to buy your own.

When you have a weapon, it is assigned to you from an armory. You do NOT keep a weapon after you leave the military.

The only thing you get to keep are your uniforms honestly. Even your NBC gear you have to give back.
Your assigned weapon is the most kept track off item that you will be issued. If you even temporarily misplace a M4, an entire base can temporarily be locked down until the weapon is found. There is no way in hell anyone is walking off base with an issued M4 without risking jail time.

Dear God, of course the Army takes it back. You actually thought they might get to keep their firearms? You know my next door neighbor is a retired fighter pilot, he keeps his f 16 fighting falcon parked in the garage…lol

The Military isn’t in the business of giving away serviceable weapons. The only time you keep your weapon for extended periods of time is while in war and during certain school phases otherwise it’s turned back into the unit armorer at the end of the day.

No-I am afraid these days you don’t although the Marine Corps did allow after Korea some M-1 carbines to be sold as they were phased out I believe and the auto feature was removed so it worked as a semi automatic.

Sure, you can keep your weapon, but you have to be buried with it in the field. Usually after suffering death at the hands of your enemy. One of your dog tags will be jammed between your front teeth, for identification when, and if your body is found. The other dog tag will be turned in, to let everyone know you are dead. Enjoy the weapon.

When you make General Officer, you can keep your M9 pistol. It moves from duty station to duty station with you. When you retire, you can buy it.

The army wants all its gear back especially the weapons.
