Do you have experience transporting firearms on commercial airlines?

December 13th, 2009 by eranio

I plan to transport 5 pistols and a number of magazines on a Southwest flight from Texas to New Mexico. I’ve looked into the various procedures for doing this, but I want to avoid any possible problems with TSA. Does anyone have any recommendations for how to transport firearms on airplanes with as little trouble as possible?

I do not plan to transport any ammunition.

I’m asking in military because I didn’t get any answers in Travel -> Packing and Preparation.

Call the airline, they will give you their specific requirements. Ive done it several times, and you have to have them in a locking case. You just have to declare them at the counter, and show that they are unloaded. The airline them will give you a form to fill out.

Most airports will have a special place for you to go and check your baggage. Of course they must be in checked bags, You cannot carry them on board. Call the airport you will be starting in and ask for more info.

Depends on the airline. Those airlines that allow it will probably want each one in a hard-sided, locked container.
