SWAT teams carry semi-automatic pistols for side arms. They also carry assault rifles that can be fired either automatic or semi automatic. There is a selector switch on the assault weapon to choose how you want it to fire. Many assault weapons also are capable of firing a three round burst.

If you are a sworn Police Officer and you have enough time on the job (usually individual departments set standards for time in service requirements), you can apply for SWAT when they have an opening.

On most departments, there isn’t a bunch of guys sitting around cleaning weapons waiting for a call. Normally, SWAT team members are Patrol Officers who work a normal shift in a patrol car, and respond to a call out when SWAT is needed. Often, they carry their SWAT gear in the trunk of their patrol car.

If you are going to join the military to get SWAT training, I would recommend joining the Army and applying for Delta Force. They use SWAT tactics in a lot of their operations. So does the SEALs
if the Navy is more to your liking.

Good luck in your police career if that is what you decide to do.

Automatic firearms isn’t huge for raids. Not really a good idea.
Learn how to shoot properly (so you don’t develop bad habits) and then practice as much as you possibly can. And get in extremely good physical shape. SWAT are mental.
P.S. Being an officer for a few years is good if not required so you’ll probably learn what you need.

SWAT will usually carry both. Automatic as in the mp5 or variation of, and semi’s as in handguns, as well as pump shotguns.

To become SWAT, you usually need to be a uniformed officer for a minimum of 5 years. This ensures you have the basics of policing down.

Teach yourself what they would teach in the academy or military training. Learn about guns, how to shoot them, learn the basic hand signals, etc.

Anything you can think of, and stay in top shape.
