Firearms Question for Current or Ex Military or knowledgable gun owners?
As far as legally available fire arms AR15 or AK47 which would you recommend for a good assault style (just in case) weapon. I used both an M14 and M16 in nam and while there were definately advantages to the M16 (mainly weight and how much ammo you could hump) I always liked the range and flatter trajectory of the M14. I have never used an AK but know that a lot of mercs have used them and wonder if they have more of the characteristics of an M14 that I like while maintaining the smaller size. Also..I’m not sure if I trust the country of manufacture for most of the AK’s..would want something reliable. Are there any other suggestions

The AK47 is the most widely used and issued weapon of nations armed forces. This is due to the fact that they are disposable. They handle mud, water, cold, heat, and grime and continue to shoot. The ammo is standard and cheap. You can pack a ton of it. You can stick other tolerable size rounds in the magazine and shoot it in a pinch. They are fun to shoot too. Drawback is that it has a limited effective range of about 300 yrds.
The AR15 is very effective flat shooting weapon. It is also very heavy. Ammo is specific to this weapon. Can’t grab an AK round and shove it in an rocknroll. It is also a very expensive weapon to obtain. There are two styles of body, milled, and stamped. The milled are better to own, as they don’t warp after multiple rounds. They keep their tolerance better. They are a bit heavier, but overall they will last much longer after lots of use.
Anther option would be be obtain the old SKS. It shoots the same round as the AK47, but has a better effective range than the AK. It too has most of the same qualities of the AK but is even more inexpensive to obtain.
Comes down to whether you want to have long range accuracy or mass amounts of firepower quickly distributed at shorter distances. For the money AK is a fun cheap machine, or an SKS. Pick one up and play with it a while.

I have a friends that have shot AK47s and they say they are unreliable, they jam more often then the average gun. But I am not 100% sure on the fact since I have not shot the gun myself.

First the military versions are not allowed in any state that I can think of; it does not matter what experience you have the military. I live in California which is no doubt more restrictive then most. Fortunately the anti gun politicians here are inept at gun control and semi automatic versions of the M-16 are legal but not the AK-47 unless its modified even further.

the ak’s 200 round clip helps on the amout of ammo front,it was also more reliable than the m14-or-m16.as for maintaining can the russians be that bad in devolpment, they used in afgan war for 11 years without problems

The AK47 is one of the most reliable guns I have ever seen dispite its country of origin. I’ve shot thousands of rounds through one without a jam or misfire. It would be my choice or recommendation if in a situation…

AK definitely. Have you ever noticed that we’re the only country in the world using the M16 system? The AK is far more rugged and forgiving than the 16 Not to mention that you can almost buy three of them for the same price as one AR type and the ammo’s generally cheaper. Kalishnikov really had the K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid) principle perfected and any country not manufacturing their own weapons generally choose AK. Colt….not so much.

Suuposedly the best assault rifle is the Steyr AUG A3. It is supposed to be the most reliable

If you really liked the m14 in vietnam, you should buy the M1A from Springfield Armories, it is a civilian copy of the m14, and has a 20 round box magazine. It fires the .308 win round.
