How are individual weapons assigned to infantry in the military?
More specifically, how is it decided if a soldier would carry an automatic rifle, or a shotgun? For instance, in many Vietnam and later war movies (e.g. "Platoon") most ‘grunts’ carry M16 or similar automatic rifles, but there may be one or two soldiers with shotguns instead. How is it decided if you’d be issued a shotgun or the standard issue automatic rifle?

Ok. well I will answer this as it pertains to the Marine Corps… The weapon you are issued depends on A) Your rank, at least if you aren’t in a grunt unit B) If you are a grunt then you get what pertains to your MOS
Now for you question about the infantry.
Each Marine starts out as a rifleman (M16 A-4). Regardless MOS, Grunt or not.
Now for grunts they get more training, then after 0311 course they choose what they want to be,,, as in a mortar man, machine gunner, mortar man…..
But you can basically count on everyone always being issued an M16 no matter what…at least to begin with

it is up to your unit and your qualification scores

i am retired us army infantry. weapons were assigned by more than 1 factor. the M-60 machine gun was assigned to team capable of carring it and the extra ammunition and the tri-pod. This took a few stocky men. Team leaders carried M-16 with a M203 grenade launcher to use for signalling with flares as needed. The M203 could also shoot shotgun shells as well. I usually rotated SAW around-SAW= Squad Automatic Weapon Amini machine gun if you will…all carried extra ammunition grenades ect…i hope this helps you out

it’s based on qualifications.
