How can you defeat an ideology with military weapons?

Military campaigns have only been successful against nation-states, not against ideas. For example, the Japaneese defeated the Philippines government in WWII, as did the NAZIs in France, but the ideology of freedom caused each agressor to eventually lose. The Russians learned this lesson in Afghanistan, and the US learned it in Vietnam. So why are we trying to once again tilt at windmills in Iraq? You cannot impose Democracy at gunpoint.

No kidding. If we were actually there to spread democracy I would try to answer this question. But we all know the real reason we invaded that country.

Military weapons cannot erase ideologies because these are indoctrinations embedded in the minds of the people. Islam will not be changed to democracy because the latter cannot be a perfect match for the Iraqis.

The point that freedom/democracy must be desired and cannot be given is a valid one. There is, however, a technical solution that has been tried once or twice: if you kill everyone who disagrees with you then you will have defeated their ideology by destroying its proponents. The trick is getting everyone. The Nazi’s couldn’t manage, neither could the Soviets, nor could the Khmer Rouge and any number of other governments and groups that have tried really, really hard to kill anyone that does not agree with them. It’s not a practical solution.

wars are not aimed to fight ideology.
Military wars are means to solve the launcher crisis not the enemy crisis (his ideology). Wars are industry, billions of $ to spin the economy and to fill the time of military peoply by exercizing and emptying their immunition to replace it with a fresh one, inventing more effective weapons.

I still think we don’t know the whole story. Actually for the sake of national security we don’t need to know. I’ve heard some interesting things about it that make sense. Russia is helping Iran build nukes at an alarming rate and Russia has wanted to control that region (Iraq) as much as Iran would like to. That being said when two superpowers are in a stuggle they tend to fight their wars in someone elses country. Take Vietnam for instance. They are afraid to use their nukes on eachother. Sometimes wars are fought in a small country by unlikely peoples but behind the scenes the war is actually on a much grander scale with much more at stake than meets the eye.

If the terrorists were attacking us with their ideology, then I’d say you were right. BUT they are attacking us with military weapons. That requires a response in kind. It doesn’t matter WHY someone is trying to kill you. You still have to use force to stop it.
True peace negotiations only happen when one side has been forced to the table by the other. Otherwise, peace talks are merely one side’s delaying the other while they rearm.
