How come the U.S. military still uses old guns like M16?

December 5th, 2009 by eranio

When will they start using better guns?
But the U.S. is spending around billion a week in iraq for the military, I mean some of it should go to infantry weapon funding

When you have a winner why throw it away. The M16 had a rough start but once we got the bugs worked out it was a fine weapon and still is. Improvements are always being looked at. Why heck you want to talk about old weapons? What about ‘Ma Deuce’? The M2, Cal 50 HB Machine Gun was designed right after World War I and is still the finest heavy machine gun in the world and is still being used today after close on 100 years! The Army wanted a new one about 20 years ago but couldn’t come up with a better one. Nah I still like Mattel’s finest.

I don’t know CHECKS, I think I would kind of be wary of a marksman on the BF with a Garand. I believe I would keep my head down. The Garand is a great weapon and accurate as far as the shooter is. Bigger round you see with better ballistics. Don’t knock it unless you’ve tried it.

MARINER, keep on squeezing buddy. Why 4 rifles of the same type. Must have cost you a bundle.

Cost, cost, cost, cost…They will move on when the weapon platform becomes totally obsolete.

The M16 is a reliable, accurate and tough gun. It pretty much stands up to any abuse anyone could give it.

trying to keep up on newer weapons the m-16 has been upgarded 4 times since 1982 it now offers a grenade launcher and a extra clip reserve and as far as the money
the military has approved so many new weapons for soldiers to use to better the defense thank you

It is rated as the second best combat rifle in the world under the AK-47. The Lee Enfield was used by the British for 50 years and was still the best rifle once WWII came around. Age doesn’t matter.

Its not the same m16 theyve been using since the 70s. The model has changed

The M-16-A-4 uses the "rail" system that the M-4 and the G-36 uses. The Rail system is genius invention that makes firearms more tactical and deadly. By adding Acog scopes, reflex red dot sights, bi-pods, flashlights and others.

The M-16 is hardly the old workhorse that it used to be. You can find it used in many settings and for many uses.

They are effective. You don’t need armor piercing bullets when you fight third world people.

We are developing infantry weapons.. just because you have no idea whats going on in the defense acquisitions community doesn’t mean its not happening.

Also, there are thousands of jobs at stake if we switched to a different company.

Because this isnt Call of Duty 4 son

Not only is the M16A4/M4 series weapon the best in the world, but EVERY single person I have seen Shot with it’s Rounds has died. I have seen Persons still alive after 7.62mm NATO & 7.62mm Combloc hits.

As someone who has ACTUALLY fired the M4 & M16A4 at the Enemy, I would unhesitatingly use it anytime, anywhere.

Older doesnt mean bad, look at the M2HB .50 caliber Machinegun

adopted in 1921, still the king of all Machinguns on the battlefield

I own and USE four M1 Garands… almost 70 years old.

I’ll go against ANYONE with an M-16 or AK-74 on the range.
