How do I legally move my guns with me from Nebraska to Texas?

February 12th, 2010 by eranio

I’m in the military and I was given a couple of rifles and a handgun when my grandfather pasted away. The guns have been stored with my father in nebraska for years because I have been stationed overseas. The guns are not registered that I know of and a couple are older. I would like to have them with me when I get stationed in Texas this summer.

You can always ship them from one FFL (Federal Firearms Licensee) in Nebraska to another in Texas. Ask at any local gun shop. That would probably be the most reliable way.

But if you are driving, just take them with you. You will want to check the transport laws for the states you would be driving through, however, on the off chance you get pulled over and searched, unloaded and locked in the trunk is always a safe bet. I think Texas has pretty liberal gun laws (i.e., NOT draconian). You might want to ask this question on the usenet (or google) group rec.guns. It is moderated and there are a lot of knowledgeable people who read and post there. I’ve been reading it since before the web. It is likely there is someone there who’s done this…

About the only way to move your guns is by transporting them by yourself. You have to get them registered first, in Nebraska. Different states have different laws as to antique firearms. If the guns aren’t registered to you then you don’t legally own them. The best way to transport them is in a locked container.

Make sure you don’t keep them in your glove compartment while you travel! :o )
