How long does it take to become a USMC/ARMY sniper?
I would like to know how long it would take to become a sniper in either the Army or Marines. If you answer, please have some sort of Military Rifle Training! I’m joining a branch soon, and I’m not sure which one I would like to join!

For the Marine Corps you would have to first complete the 13 weeks of Recruit Training to first be able to earn the title of Marine, afterwards you would go through 8 weeks of Basic Infantry Training in Camp Lejeune or Camp Pendleton. Once you are assigned to your unit you would have to qualify for the Snipers Course. This essentially means that you would
A) Qualify as an Expert on the Rifle Range
B) Have a High Physical Fitness Score
C) Pass a security investigation and screening
D) have good vision and preferably be right handed
E) Come from an Infantry MOS

You can talk to an R.O.T.C. rep. or ask a recruiter.

Aniper School in the Army is 5 weeks, I think, but getting there is the hard part. They really don’t have a whole lot of snipers. They have a whole lot of squat designated marksmen (which is a recent development), but that is sort of one step below sniper. Before even being considered for either honor, you have to be an excellent shot, like the top 10 percent, at least. It used to be that you would be selected for the battallion snipers first, then you would go to sniper school. If you passed, you would be allowed to remain in the snipers squad. I understand that now you have to be a squad designeted marksman for a while before being considered for a sniper slot in your battallion. I would say that you would have to serve at least 2 years before becoming a sniper or getting to go to the school (and you have to be the best shot in your squat and one of the best in your battallion).

I joined the Army as an 11B(Infantry).After graduating basic training I was off to my duty station.I was in my regular line unit for three months before the offer of being in the sniper section was given to me.I had a pt score of 295,20/15 vision and qualified expert at the range every time. You have to be an outstanding soldier with the rare ability to think for yourself and to be able to problem solve.Usually units will hold tryouts for scouts and snipers but ours had just stood up so we were hand picked from the line dogs.It was two years later and a deployment to Afghanistan(Not to mention a purple heart)before I even got to go to sniper school to actually become qualified. Its really all about what kind of person you are.Persistence pays off.Oh yeah In a battalion of 800 there are maybe 9 snipers:of those maybe 3 are schooled.Depends on the unit.
