How much can the simple assault-rifle design improve?

December 13th, 2009 by eranio

We are armed with M16 and M4s, and thats not gonna change in a while. but in the future, how much can the gun design improve?

I was thinking bull-pup and caseless ammo, and a recoil-reducing systems like on the KRISS sub-machine gun.

Basically, what are some improvments that the assault rifle will have in the future? thanks.

Well they have already improved assault rifles since the M4. The AK-108 and H&K 416 for example are extremely accurate, yet impossible to jam. That is the main downfall to the M16 style rifles is that they are not as reliable in certain combat conditions.

    You said it…

    Bullpup design….recoil arresters…. noise suppression would be good…. maybe some auto-adjusting scopes?…..

Personally, I think we need to get away from the light caliber CRAP we’re issuing our guys now, and get some REAL firepower back in their hands like they had with M1 and M14.

well, they’re working on equipping them with cameras so you can shoot around corners without exposing yourself. But that’s small time stuff. I would be surprised if someone, private or military, doesn’t come out with a rifle that can attach to your arm in some way within the next 30 years.

Screw on barrel end (short for those inside vehicals and doing house to house and longer barrels when out in the field or other types of long range shooting.

Something like the Lead Computing Optical Sight on the F-16 for long range shooting.

    Caseless ammo.

Remote controlled turrent with camera. Two troubles with rifles that shoot around corners is one could get confused in operating it and another is one has to be next to the rifle. With a remote controlled turrent the guy could sniper fire without even being on the same mountain top or building. He could just place the rifle in position and walk away. If jamming is a concern, just run some cable, even a couple hundred yards could protect the gunner from a host of responses.
