How often do you use and/or train with guns in the US Navy?

I know the Navy is a part of the military, but it seems "less military" than the Army or the Marines. I am going to join the Navy, and it would be nice to use guns, or at least really know how.

The two main small arms you will use in the Navy are the 9mm pistol, and either an M16/M4 or M14, depending on where you are stationed. Some of the ships are still using M14′s, but the M16/M4 are slowly starting to take over as the primary rifle for use in the Navy.
As was stated earlier, we also use shotguns, but thats only for certain watches, and that watch isnt manned all the time…

You do get small arms training, mainly with a pistol and shotgun. We would shoot skeet off the back of the ship for training, and sometimes shoot trash if it didn’t sink when we threw it over the side, pretty cool. You use the pistol when on watch and a short barrel shotgun for on board repelling. The guns we most used are the really big ones attached to the ship like the 5-inch cannon, which we trained on every day while underway, very cool!

In the NAVY… you will LEARN the difference between WEAPONS … such as small arms… and GUNS… which HAVE REALLY BIG HOLES IN THEM.
Repeat after me: This is my weapon, this is my gun, this is for shooting and this is for fun…
You will be shown the physical part of this in Basic training.

The Navy isn’t "less military" because you’re still going to be handling weapons, you’re still going to have drill instructors barking in your face, you’re still going to have to salute people and call them "sir" and "ma’am," live in barracks, shave your head, wear uniforms, etc. etc.
I was in the Coast Guard (similar to the Navy in many ways) and we had training in handling pistols and rifles.

If its small arms weapons you want to train with you should join the Army or the Marines. You’ll receive small arms training in the navy but it won’t be nearly as much as in the land services. Small arms, weapons of 50 caliber and below aren’t very effective aganst most any sort of warship. Good luck to you.

they train you with live fire in boot camp.
and you can try and qualify for the seal teams now they use all kinds of fun stuff diff rent weapons. and equipment.
I almost qualified for the seal teams lost by ten seconds on my swim trials, but sea bees are a good career
and you travel any where they send you.
gotta remember once you signed your name on there contracts you belong to them, so be sure you want this
I was in for four years. and seen some real bad stuff.
look into Navy.com and that should help you decide.
good luck

As a Gunners Mate I had more hands on than most folks. Onboard a ship, I was part of the security alert force and we had annual quals with shotguns and pistols. Now that I’m with a Sea Bee unit, I am the battalion GM and do all of the training and weapons quals for all the folks here.
You most likely will not get much, if any, exposure to small arms unless you seek out a place that offers it. If your base has a range, you can go talk with the GM’s there about qualifying and how/when you can do it.
