If I joined the military and was deployed somewhere would I be able to choose my weapon?

If I was deployed would I just be given a rifle or would I have a choice? Could I say "I want a M-16" or something like that?

The awnser to your question is no. The military would chose your weapon based on your skill level, job title, and location. Having been deployed several times I prefer the M4 or M16. Officers and Senior NCOs are usually issued a M9. Infantry soldiers can be issued up to two weapons.

No. They’d pick the weapon for you. If you are an infantryman or Marine "Grunt", you’re likely to get an M-16, though.

Simply, NO.
The military is always changing its research categories. Each branch has input, but they all must heed the dictates of the Pentagon. Interchangeability is the key, with only a few exceptions.
The M-16 is on the way out. Newer weapons have always come and replaced older weapons. The CAR-16 ( very much shortened barrel and stock fully automatic version of the M-16 that usually had a silencer built-in) was only given to selected military personnel, they had no choice.
I had a buddy when we lived in Idaho who went to Iraq in 2003, and they would not let him carry a side arm in addition to his M-16, they confiscated it. He could only bring an M-16 into his truck! He elected to carry a big hammer to crush the knuckles of any Iraqi who might try to run up onto the running board of the truck, and when the Iraqi might potentially put his hand on the door of the moving truck to hang on to shoot my buddy with his handgun– WHACK! That was what his buddies told him to do! The M-16 is worthless in that kind of situation!!!! Yet, his command confiscated his pistol because it was not Army-issue and was not authorized !!!!!
Whatever weapon your unit is assigned, that is the weapon you will use. That is essential, of course, in certain aspects. In the maintenance of the weapon, exact same parts are necessary to ensure a speedy repair, rather than having you go out without a working weapon, because your weapon does not use the same parts as others. Also, your choice of ammunition must be the exact same so they can quick-order large batches of ammunition. It is hard enough that officers (usually) and some NCOs only carry pistols.

It depends on your unit. You will have some version of the M-16. Weather it is the A2 or A4 or the M4. You may have a 203 and be a grenadier or get a SAW. You can ask. I have had Marines ask to carry a saw. So long as you are capable of handling it, you may get it.
