Perhaps it had to do with the idiots who fired on the rescue Helicopters.

Wasn’t martial law declared to stop looting?

read the book, "The Prince", its basically a "does the end justify themeans" type thing, that also says that the main job of the govt. is to protect its nation, if that means taking guns away from a couple people to stop them from shooting each other, then the end justoifies the mean.

The military has the right to defend the peopled of New Orleans. The situation after Katrina was one of chaos so it made sense for the military to crack down on possible sources of violence. If New Orleans became the wild west in terms of shoot outs between private citizens, then how would that lead to a more secure city after the disaster? The question is how long did it take for the weapons to be given back. I am sure there is more to this story.

The authorities have always had the right to de-arm criminals. NO is full of the vermin. Too bad they were not able to distinguish. between citizens and predators.easily enough. Blanket orders do not always cover all the fine distinctions. But in each case the soldiers allowed higher ups to make the final decision. As they were properly trained. I know I would be conflicted between complying with US military and perserving my personal civil rights. In that moment I know I would always attempt to deal will my military rather than physically confront them. Both for my trust in their training and my sure feeling that I would come out second in that fight.

It was unconstitutional and it resulted in a lot of new laws being passed to prevent it in the future.
