In military and upgrading weapon?
I’m switching from reserve to active duty army after college, and was thinking of going into infantry. I was wondering if you can modify your issued weapon with any accessories (optics, grips, lights, etc.), if you were not issued them so long as the parts and the rifle met mil-spec after the conversion (like personally buying appropriate gear for it). Any details on this would be helpful, I’d feel kind of dumb asking a CO about this. Thanks in advance.

you can as long as it goes with the mission you’ll be doing. If you want to tape a dvd player to the weapon then no. j/k

In infantry units there are usually a wide range of accessories you can either use or not use. If your unit has crappy optics etc. as long as you don’t have a jackass in charge of you, you should be able to drop your own money on a better optic or whatever. I had guys in my platoon buying things like that before we left for Iraq. Make sure you actually know what works well before you go dropping money like that though.
