In the military and trying to buy a firearm in the state I’m assigned to?
I’m trying to buy a firearm in Missouri, but federal law requires you to show a government issued ID that proves that you have resided in the state that you’re purchasing a firearm from for at least 30 days. My question is being in the military is there anyway around that because I have an Oklahoma driver’s license with an Oklahoma residence on it? According to law it looks as if I can’t even purchase one in Oklahoma either because I am currently residing here in Missouri. The only thing I can think of is bring some bills with me and maybe a copy of the lease which I’m having trouble finding at the moment. The bills I do have I noticed that it only has my address on the stub that you mail in which I already mailed in my last set of bills, so what do I do? Please help!
Thanks,
Justin
I can’t believe I didn’t think of my LES, but when I checked it just now it’s only showing the address on my most recent one and I think I need one from at least 30 days ago. As for my PCS orders I’ll have to look around for them, but I’m sure I have them some where.
By the way, for whoever asked, I’m a SrA in the USAF here at Whiteman. I don’t think you can check out firearms at our BX, outdoor rec, or our armory or I would of heard of it by now for the 3 years I’ve been here do to all the hunters in my section. Our range is for OFUO I believe some bases have rec ranges. Anyways, thanks everyone for all the good insight. I think I’ll go look for my orders so I can possibly get my handgun tomorrow.
I can’t find my orders, so I’m gonna print my LES from 30 days ago since I noticed it has the zip code that it’s based on at the bottom and hopefully that will work for me. If not, I’ll just go to my MPF this week and hopefully purchase an XDM next weekend if the store still has them.
I went to the store today and I asked them this same question and they said there is a new law that became in effect about a year ago stating that the only way I can buy a firearm here in Missouri is that I have to have a photo ID that matches my current address no matter if I’m military or not to purchase a firearm. But I believe it is only another stupid Missouri law, so I guess I’ll have to drive down to Oklahoma and buy it there.

First off I want to say that the first answer is wrong. There is not always an exemption for military. It is up to each state as far as how they want to do it. If a state says you must be a resident then a military I.D. will not override it. Right now we are stationed in Alaska and the local gun shops will sell a firearm to you if you have an out of state license only if it is from certain states. They have a list of what states they can and can not accept a license from. And if you are on the no-go list a military I.D. is worthless.
As far as your address does your LES show your current address? How about taking in a few of them that go back several months? Also, are you in the Army? Have you checked in to what is required by your post to buy a firearm? I know the Army posts up here have some tough standards in regards to Soldiers buying guns. I have seen many of them have their wives do the paperwork and purchasing of the gun as it is easier for them to do it then the active duty person. But this is only when the wife is an avid shooter also and not just buying it to hand right over to the spouse (that’s illegal). Is your wife in to firearms also? If so does she have a state license?

There are always exceptions to residency laws for Military.
Talk to whoever is going to do your background check.. they will either know what to do, or will know how to find out what to do.

I know that my friend who is in the Navy can purchase firearms in California even though he is officially a resident of Arizona…
He is STATIONED in SanD and has been there for years now… But since he is only STATIONED in California, he is still an official resident of Arizona and he retains his Arizona Drivers License.
I believe that you, like he, should be able to use your military ID to purchase weapons.
As I said, I can only tell you the story I know and he has purchased guns in both Arizona and California since ‘moving’ to California because the Navy told him to.

Show a copy of your orders. Short of that, declare residency in Missouri.
If you pay taxes in Oklahoma, that means you live there.

dude why buy a weapon you can check out a weapon from the arms room and buy ammo for hunting at the PX like check out a shotgun and then buy a out of state hunting license for deer or wild boar if its for defence then dont do eithe call the local sheriffs office and buy some mace from a police supply store or grizzly spray online dont shoot some fool in town use karate weapons like a steel whip or a set of nun chuk u i used to keep a double barreled fox twelve gauge under my car seat but hey you are aware that if caught with a personal weapon in the barracks you could do time card it and place it in the armory like ai said ask your first sargent if he hunts they can tell you whats the deal on firearms or try the MP’s we used to go shooting with some at FT Bragg and i knew the 5th special forces armorers and they would clear weapons in the forest and we went along to fire serious rounds so ask the armorers in your unit dont get busted on a felony in the army you do two streaches in jail civil and army

goto personnel and ask for a copy of your orders and for the purpose of residency this should satisfy your gunshops needs. just show your mil. id with your DL and that should work

You need your Military ID and a copy of your PCS orders showing that you are now stationed there.

PCS orders and ID card should be good enough.
Just be glad you’re in Missouri, not the God-forsaken hell-hole known as California, where the AR-15s only hold 10 rounds.
I’ve never heard of being able to check out weapons from the arms room. Sounds like someone’s unit armorer has a side business going…
Good Luck
