In the United States military, how is it decided what weapon or job a soldier in a squad has on the field?

Some soldiers might have a rifle, but others might have a sub-machine gun or a machine gun or a sniper rifle. And some people assist the officers, use a radio, or carry ammunition for a bigger weapon. When is this decided and on what guidelines for each?

depends, obviously snipers have to go through sniper school, you’re going to have to give guys the weapons they’ve had the most training at but what it comes down to is what you have available, what you need, and who is good at what.
