The assault rifle was not written into the game’s coding, making it impossible to obtain without mods (if any exist that is).

The Assault rifle was orginally created for Halo.
But in Halo 2 Bungie decided they didn’t want it in, and made some new weapons to replace it.
But When Halo 3 was released – Bungie wanted to bring back some things from The Orginal Halo. Which Included the Assault rifle.
