Is it reasonable to hold the citizens of the U.S. liable for the actions of it's government and military?

September 8th, 2010 by eranio

Considering that citizens vote to elect the officials that represent them, and fund the decisions and actions of their representatives and their military by paying taxes, are they just as responsible as, say, the senator or congressman that votes to go to war with another country and the soldier who aims his gun at an adversary and pulls the trigger?

That is, is there any real distinction among the government officials who decide to wage war, the taxpayers that fund it, the soldiers that participate in it, and the citizens that support and oppose it, or are they all just as complicit?

Our obligation is take charge of the government if it gets out of control.

The main problem is the arrogance in Washington DC and ZERO accountability for anything our Representatives do. This has to change. WE can only elect new reps every 2 years, and senator every 6 years.

If those crooked bastards pass legislation that blows up they ought to be held accountable for it. It’s not fair for them to pass something it blow up and the American people have to pay while nothing happens to them.

Yes, because we are a government of the people by the people. The majority of people support wars.

Why single out the US? How about a few centuries of British, French or Spanish colonialism? How about the former Soviet Union? As much a people seem to like to whine about the US, for the most part, we don’t invade, conquer and occupy like our allies do. Hell, after the Brits wiped out the native American population, all they had to do was give the colonies a few seats in Parliament and the sun would still never set on the British Empire. We just wanted representation. But noooo… they had to rule us. Well, that’s a German king for you… say… speaking of holding a people "liable" for something…
