Is the Steyr AUG an assault rifle or a sniper rifle?

If it is an assault rifle, what makes it an assault rifle, or if it is a sniper rifle, what makes it a sniper rifle?

It is considered an assault rifle. The Bullpup design allows the weapon to be shorter without sacrificing barrel length, which is nice in the context of modern urban war. There is a designated marksman varient, Steyr AUG HBAR–T, that is fitted with optics though.

AUG is officially an assault rifle, but thanks for it being made by Steyr you can treat it like one somewhat.

The standard configuration of the Steyr AUG is an assault rifle. It fires fully automatically from large magazines. The weapon is modular, however, and different parts can be switched out to make it perform more like a machine gun or a hunting rifle. Wikipedia lists it as an assault rifle.

It is an assault rifle. Technically, assault rifles can be used as sniper rifles…all you got to do is attached a scope. But normally, sniper rifles; such as the M40, Barrett M98, SVU, etc.; have a longer range and a bigger caliber bullet than a assault rifle. More information on the AUG can be found at the following link:

It’s an assault rifle – that’s what ‘AUG’ stands for. The standard scope on top only magnifies to 1.5x. Its effective range is only 300m (though a good soldier is accurate to about 400m). It can be fired fully automatic by pulling the trigger further.
But by swapping the receiver, barrel and magazine, one could fashion a precision rifle with a heavier, longer barrel, bipod for support and a stronger scope.
But even so, the Steyr AUG only fires 5.56mm rounds – definitely not suitable for sniping. Mind you don’t confuse the Steyr AUG with the Steyr HS 50, the Steyr Scout or the Steyr SSG 69 – Steyr-Mannlicher’s true sniper rifles.

Assault rifle. Definitely not a sniper rifle. It does not have range, or stability to qualify as a sniper rifle.
