Is the term military-style rifle the proper term to use when talking about AR-15s, semi-auto AK variants, etc?

I already know that assault weapon is not a good term, since all weapons (even knives and baseball bats) can be used for assaulting people (hence making them assault weapons). But would military style be better? After all, those guns are modeled exactly after their full auto counterparts. What do you think?
Ok, but isn’t semi-auto rifle a little vague. Because you can break semi auto rifles down into two groups. The low capacity hunting rifles and the ones that accept high capacity magazines.

It’s one term you can use.
    Another is battle rifle clone.

That’s much more accurate than the term "Assault Weapon"

I use "sporting rifle" as the term for civilian ak’s and ar’s.

The best terms are semi-auto rifles, sporter rifles and maybe even para-military style rifles.

"Semi-auto rifle" as they are no different then a ruger 10/22 or any other semi-auto rifle.

The proper term would be semi-automatic sporting rifle. Because that’s what they are.

The only thing these guns have in common with their military counterparts is the aethetics and the caliber used.

I see a lot of gun writers using the term "service rifle" or "semi-auto service rifle". Some use the "semi-auto AR.AK" nomenclature, and a lot have gotten to the point of just using AR or AK, because everyone who really knows doesn’t need the "semi-auto clone, etc, etc". If I’m talking to someone that knows ZERO about the "assault rifles" (mind numbed liberals or Media brain washed ) I start with the " Semi-Auto Service Rifle" so they don’t think full machine gun,but that it does come from a military platform-that way it can mean M14,M1A,AR,AK or SKS,SIG,what ever. I always throw in the "perfectly legal to own by any citizen who is legal to own a rifle’.

A description I heard for the first time just a few days ago is "legal civilian variant", which sounds completely accurate to me.

    Shoot straight and stay safe.
