This is a very difficult question. legally, any nation that is a signatory to the Nonproliferation treaty has agreed not to work towards obtaining nuclear weapons, although they are allowed to pursue peaceful use of nuclear power. Iran is an NPT member, and has violated the NPT in the past. The NPT however, has no provision authorizing the use of force to enforce its rules.

ethically, the evidence required to launch a preemptive attack on a country pursuing nukes must be be the equivalent of ‘beyond a reasonable doubt" since the cost of entering a misguided war is so high (ie:Iraq). also, if force were to be used, the acquisition of weapons would have to be imminent.

Having said that, i do believe that it is just to prevent a nation who is a signatory to the NPT from acquiring nuclear weapons. however, we must be sure it is a weapons program, and not a civilian program.

It becomes just (justified) if the aggressor gets away with it. It is justified if such action is based on ones national security: and who’s to say what’s fair for the goose isn’t fair for the gander. What’s right for one country may not be right for another; depends on where you maintain citizenship as to how the political winds blow for you.

I’m not saying it’s "just" for American elected officials to protect our National Security. What I’m saying is: that’s their job, and I expect them to do their job, and without excuse or exception, and regardless of the collateral damage, political or otherwise.

Nations sign international treaties. Iran signed one called the "Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty." In that treaty, the nations that already have nuclear capabilities agree to provide the same peaceful capabilities to other nations provided other nations agree not to try to get nuclear weapons using that technology.

Iran got the help in making a nuclear reactor for peaceful purposes. But now it is trying to get nuclear weapons. That is a violation of the international treaty. Any nation that signs an international treaty can enforce the treaty.

The USA signed the treaty also so can enforce it. If Iran does not stop its efforts in getting nuclear weapons, the USA can do what is necessary to stop those efforts.

You may not call it "just" but it is allowed under the treaty.

The answer is a question, does any country have a right to defend itself from what if feels is a threat to it’s existence?
