Lightweight Sniper Rifles?

March 4th, 2010 by eranio

I am writing a story the consists of a sniper rifle and I’m sort of ignorant of them.

What I need help with is, I need a name of a lightweight sniper rifle. One that a person can carry with them for far distances. It also needs to be powerful and quick to use.

To help me, think of a good sniper rifle to use in a zombie apocalypse…
The conditions you have is were you need a sniper that is: quick to use, lightweight, easy to maintain, not a hassle to sprint with, power.

A "sniper rifle" is a rifle used by a trained person, so it is actually "Sniper’s rifle", and most actual "sniper’s rifles" are quite heavy on purpose,to minimize recoil response with weight (inertia) and to provide a solid base to fire from. Most military long range weapons are 12 or more pounds, so a true "Sniper’s rifle" isn’t anything you want. What most people look for in the scenario you describe would be an AR-15 (M-16 type) light combat rifle/service rifle. There would be variations on that theme with AK 47 or SKS types, Bullpup offerings, etc. Most would be available in a 223/5.56 or 7.62x 39, or even the 7.62 NATO Those aren’t the only options, there is the FN-AR,a 308 based on the Browning BAR and having a 20 cartridge magazine,semi-auto, and still "portable".
The Sako TRG would be a great set-up.
And yes, the US uses the Remington 700 as the base for it’s long range rifle, but I’d still take the Sako.
EDIT: and so glad others will point out the "sniper rifle" faux pas also; getting the right nomenclature is actually important with weapons, and we are a picky sort. Also, the AK-SKS rifles aren’t accurate enough to be long range weapons, but there are rifles based from their concepts to serve that purpose-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragunov_Sniper_Rifle

Wait… "I’m sort of ignorant"… don’t sell yourself short. You pass the ignoramus test with flying colors. Consider yourself very ignorant.

Yet me see if I have this right… you want to re-invent what you refer to as a "sniper rifle" to fit your story… is that correct? Maybe you should stick to writing about things you have personal knowledge of?

"Sniper rifles" (a term we don’t use here because what you’re referring to doesn’t exactly exist except in the hands of a real, bona fide sniper) are inherently heavy because of their construction. A lighter version would be a garden variety hunting rifle.

It can’t be made to exist simply because you want it to be. I would give you a more in depth answer but I have a strong feeling it would be a waste of my time.
