Loudness of U.S. Military weapons?

May 15th, 2010 by eranio

I’m just wandering, how loud are the Individual/crew served weapons?
I know how loud a rifle/pistol shot is, I wear ear protection still, with .22′s to .300 mag.
How loud are the = grenade launcher, rocket launchers, mortars, etc.? Can you wear ear plugs when firing weapons in the Military?
Thanks

a crew served weapon (SAW/ 240B) is going to have the same effect as a .22 and a .308 because that’s their caliber. they just fire faster with link fed rounds. the 203 Grenade launcher isn’t too loud when it’s first fired but when it impacts it’s pretty loud. Thing is that it’s being fired away from you so you really aren’t going to have to worry about damage to your ear in that event. Rocket Launchers are extremely loud both when firing and exploding. You are supposed to wear earplugs at all times when firing any weapons system due to the enormous amount of people coming back with hearing problems (me). you’re going to want to hear what your leadership says while on patrol so it’s one of those situations where you’re screwed either way. I went without earplugs while down range which has given me tinnitus, but i’m alive. the best set of ear protection i’ve found comes from surefire. good luck and don’t count on being able to blow up too much.

Just look at military photos. Most guys shooting these weapons off are wearing ear protection.

the m2 is extremely loud, the m249 and m240 sound like bb guns when they are firing next to the 50 cal. You wear ear protection

You always try to wear ear protection when possible. Most of those weapons are very loud, and when fired in certain areas, they are even louder.

I have fired various weapons with and without ear pro and you sometimes lose your hearing temporary and or you get a huge headache. Many times your earplugs get pushed into your ear from the concussion/sound of the weapon.

One of the loudest weapons I ever heard was on a Navy ship. They fired their CIWIS weapon and it had a very scary sound that scared all of the Marines who were not prepared for it. The sound echoed off of the steel ship and it sounded and felt awful. I think the Navy got a good laugh out of this.
