military lasers replacing traditional rifles?

December 27th, 2009 by eranio

does anyone know if they can make rifle sized laser gun to shoot people. if so how will that change warfare. if they have all these hi tech satillites why do they send recon units. please be serious
since we have large lasers today that can vaporize people, how come we aren’t using them in iraq. put them on fighter jets or helicopters

yes, a man portable laser would be impossible at this time. The powerful lasers we have are too delicate and require too much power for an individual to carry it.

As for someone standing still long enough to be burned by a laser, the most powerful lasers we have today cause missiles to explode in flight in a tiny fraction of a second. They would vaporize a person almost instantly.

    No…
    Not even close..
    Too much power required…

doubtful it will happen any time soon.. the Star Wars stuff you suggest is a long time off as they require too much power to come in a package that small…

Using them to paint targets will do for now.

No one is going to sit still long enough to get burned by a laser. Laser guns are not an option and will not be for the foreseeable future. The latest military endeavor involving lasers is exploring the possibility of using high-powered lasers to permanently blind enemy pilots. Sad but true.

well i saw on discovery that they actually did a laser for destroying rockets in the air.but it is BIG.they did a mobile version it was a laser mounted on a truck but it was huge.so i don’t think they will have laser rifles in the next let’s say 10 years
