Military Police Weapons in Civilian Use?

December 10th, 2009 by eranio

If you were to be in one of the military’s branches and become a military police officer. For example a Air Force Security Forces officer that goes through training. When they get off are they allowed to carry a weapon off duty in society? Or is it just for Police Officers? I think that if you were to be in the military and you are a police officer you should have the same option to carry an off-duty weapon…

Thanks in advance!

MIlitary police aren’t authorized to carry off-duty weapons unless on special assignment with proper authorization. Bad info correction. Military Police Officers can and do apprehend civillians while on Military Installations and/or reserves. Further, law enforcement tarining in the Military is acutally some of the finest there is, equipping them to handle the same incidents as their civillian counterparts.

Military law-enforcement personnel have no jurisdiction over civilians who are not on a military reservation.

With a few, rare, exceptions they are not allowed to carry a firearm off duty.

—Military Police may NOT carry off duty weapons off of a military installation within the United States of America. That may be different in other areas out of the USA such as Iraq or Afganistan, but here at home they neither have the training to deal with the civilian justice system nor do they have jurisdiction off their base.
—The ONLY military Agency that can arrest civilians is the United States Coast Guard and only then in performance of their duties.
