military recruiting question?

March 5th, 2010 by eranio

Ive been laid off now for six months and havent been able to find any work. The only people i know that are always hiring is the military. In 1999 I got an OTH from the army shortly after basic. The OTH has in no way affected whom Ive worked for, my ability to purchase and carry firearms. Will it affect me if I would be interested in rejoining a branch of the military? Thanks.

Yes. The miltiary is really selective right now for prior service unless you have a RE1 and need no medical waivers. You shouldn’t join the military just for a job.

    Talk to your local recruiter

Absolutely it will. I’m not sure but I do believe an OTH precludes you from re entering the military.

Go to the Army, tell them you want to be an MP or ground pounder. They will figure it out.

Your currently listed as RE-1 based on your information.
And the thing is, now, the military is very VERY selective in who they choose (such as no or little waivers and mos choices).

It would be hard, but you can try it by talking with a recruiter of your choice of branch.

Joining the military for a job is a great solution for unemployment. What is your RE code. RE1 w/o waivers is the only way. Talk to a recruiter.

Yeah. It will. Only two branches take prior service. Army and Marines. If you’ve already been discharged OTH, I’m not sure if it involves a wavier, probationary or what. If you had any rank other than P-01 I’m not sure you’ll be able to get it back. Call a recruiter and ask. If you were discharged and didn’t want to go back before, do you really want to go back now? Check out county, city and state jobs, look for something temporary, and make sure you’re in shape before you make the decision to go back. Also see what MOS’s are in demand right now.

If you choose the right job you could be more likely to get a wavier.

I can’t add much more than what was already said about talking to a recruiter and that it may be more difficult because of your OTH. I just wanted to throw in that although they are being more selective about prior military, ALL branches (not sure about coast guard) are currently accepting prior service. I know this because I just re-joined as prior service. I ended up switching from navy to air force, but along the way I talked to the army, marines, navy, and air force and they all were willing to accept prior service.

    Good luck.
