Need an assault rifle that will penetrate a Soviet tank, any suggestions?

March 5th, 2010 by eranio

I’m too old to join the Marines.
I am looking to buy an assault rifle before the taxes go up on them or they are banned again. I am looking for one with really good penetration. Im not looking to blow up a Soviet tank but would like a weapon that could poke a hole in the armored equivalent.

The Soviet T-72M1 carries quite a bit of armour protection as well as upgraded composite armour. On some versions this armor can be as thick as 22-24 inches, and is designed to protect against HEAT rounds. If it will take a high explosive anti tank round I would say it it doubtful a rifle that will penetrate it.
Still a large caliber assault rifle of .50 caliber or higher may help. An assault rifle is not what you are looking for if you intend to work some armor piercing applications though. The rifle in question will be of the Anti-material variety. the second link shows some examples of the anti-material rifles. I hope you have deep pockets. None of the rifles listed are going to be cheap if they are even available. The third link is to a site that shows examples of the type of rifle you would need. Hope this helps.

wow…where do you live? the hunting season here is closed for soviet tanks. and it is the ammo that will penetrate, not the rifle

I would suggest the M-72 LAW with armor piercing rounds. Don’t forget to fill out a form 4473. Happy hunting!

    M16 with grenade launcher:

Fire smoke grenade at tank, flank it and climb aboard. open hatch. toss rifle in tank.

    Well done!

Well, you could join the Marine Corps, they have weapons like that and the neat thing is that they will not only let you fire it, they will supply all of the ammo for it. Know what else? They will give you some really neat clothes to wear, really good food, the neatest little hunting rifle you ever saw, a place to lay your head at night and on top of all that, they give you some spending money. How’s that for a deal? I tried it and it was great. In all fairness, though, they took me on a hunting trip that I didn’t enjoy all that much.

Assault rife? No such animal. There are some anti-tank rifles chambered in .50 BMG and even 20mm rounds capable of penetrating armored vehicles. Currently Barret is offering a fifty cal so check into that.

Terms like ‘assault rifle’ and ‘silencer’ are buzz words and terms used by the media and anti-gunner activists to further erode our 2nd. Amendment Rights. Please don’t feed the frenzy. I seriously doubt that a combat rifle (even one chambered in 7.62×51 NATO or even the more powerful .30-06 round) would penetrate military tank armor. That armor exceeds six inches of steel.

The rifle is the easy part. However the ammunition maybe difficult and expensive to get hold of. I think you’ll need depleted uranium tipped rounds.

    http://www.cheaperthandirt.com – they might have a surplus A-10 Warthog.

    No such animal

By definition an assault rifle is of intermediate caliber and would not be capable of penetrating armor

The only thing I can think of that would be readily available on our market would be a Barret wit armor piercing incendiary rounds

    get the ammo here

No "assault rifle" will penetrate that much steel. .50 BMG and larger used to be a anti tank round waaay back, but today it would not cut it. Soviet Tanks do have weaknesses, Student protestors disabled a few in Hungary by simple molatov cocktails, you could smoke the tank crew out by plugging the exhaust etc. Other than that, you need military specific weapons including LAW rockets etc.

The RM4 three phase plasma rifle by Germonic Ind. Price is $ 40,000.oo

go talk to a gun dealer you can buy a 50 cal bmg you can get bullets from cheaper than dirt. order a magazine on line

No hand-held rifle will ever penetrate anything close to a modern battle tank. A .50bmg won’t even go through a WW2 Sherman tank. What you’re asking is pure fantasy. Most modern thin skinned armored vehicles will stop most small arms.

Nothing short of .50bmg (12.7mm) would scratch the paint. Below is a video of why you never bring a rifle to a tank fight.

No assault rifle round carries that kind of energy. For a man-portable weapon that would do that, you’d need something like a TOE missile, RPG-7, LAW, or recoiless rifle to penetrate tank armor. I’m pretty sure those are classified as destructive devices by the ATF and are going to be difficult to get.

If you want an assault rifle, just buy a civilian version of the AK-47, or an AR-15, or a M-1A, or a Ruger mini-14/39.

armored vehicles are designed to not be penetrated by the standard assualt weapons of our day, be it an M-16 or an AK-47 or something else.

Assault rifles by definition use ‘intermediate’ chamberings, meaning, not as powerful as a true rifle catridge.

Then, the answer is clear. Get a rifle that shoots a true rifle cartridge.

If you want something that is very similar to an assault rifle but fires a true rifle cartridge, look at the M-14 (aka M1A for the civilian version) FN-FAL, G-3, and the AR-10 which is basically an M-16 that is enlarged by about 25% so it can accept bigger ammo.

A Browning m2 may get through the skin, but that is a little heavy to be an assault rifle.

If you really want to get through the skin of armor, there is always this gun:

If you want a gun with good penetration, get a semi auto M14. The 308 round will do the job and large mags are available.

The Dragunov might not be a bad choice either, they are reasonable in price:
