Which makes a louder report up close and at a distance? An M4/M16/M249 in 5.56X45 or an AK-47 in 7.62X39?
Assuming the 5.56×45 has a higher chamber pressure and muzzle velocity than the 7.62X39?

I would say the M249 in 5.56×45. Because a 7.62×39 is a little slower than a 5.56×45.

Both are equal loud up close…. The 7.62x39MM at 500 yards sounds a little louder to me

Is this with or without hearing protection? At what distance? With which particular rounds in each please? Considerations of frequency, sound wave vs. distance, and individual ballistic characteristics should be taken into account when making these types of judgments Look forward to your follow up.

The AK-47 does sound louder, but shot the same round in an SKS and it does not seem as loud. Also are you shooting on a flat plain, or in a mountain valley. all of these points make a difference. A longer barrel will reduce some sound as well. And what difference does it truly make: if the shooter is any good by the time you hear the sound your already died!

Sup Zach, I see you still have no life and are still playing video games…Geek Wars 2 is’t it? How old are you now…22yrs old and still dreaming of the day you can afford a rifle? I started my first business when I turned 20yr old and was able to retire at before I my 30th B-day. Heck, I’m working on my 2nd and 3rd business venture. I guess some people would rather sit around beating off to video games and and trolling forums than doing something with their lives.
