Question on military rifles?
Which is louder, the 5.56X45 or 7.62X39?
Many people say the 5.56 is louder then the 7.62X39 dude to the much higher gas pressure(62,000 psi for 5.56 vs only 45,000 psi for 7.62×39) and that the bullet is almost 1000 ft per second faster. Is this true? I get mixed answers, some say the 5.56 is louder, others say the 7.62X39 is louder.
I know the 5.56 has a sharper sound while the 7.62X39 has more of a duller sound.
Also how does the 5.56X45 and 7.62X39 compare to the 7.62X51 NATO/.308 which has more powder?
Anyone who owns or fired both an AR-15/M4/M16 and an AK-47/SKS could help me?

I have shot rifles in both calibers, but I always use ear protection so I don’t know. Mainly it depends on the rifle, barrel length, muzzle device and ammo. Most AR specs I have seen are in the 155-165db range. (you can find these by looking for AR suppressor specs.) But I can’t find any info on the db level of an AK, although I would assume it is around the same level.

I’ve fired M16A2′s and the 240G. 5.56 is sharper as you said, but 7.62 seems to have a louder thump.

5.56 is higher crisper sound.
7.62 is chunkier sound, but you also kind of "feel" it.

If it is coming from an AK series, the 7.62x39mm will be louder (and bright as hell at night) than an M16/M4s 5.56mm. You need to realize the weapon has a lot to do with it not just the bullet. The AK-74 series, 5.45x39mm is still loud as hell (I carried an AK-74 (5.45x39mm) or an AKMS (7.62x39mm) when I was OPFOR at Ranger School years ago with a M-14 on and off back in the early 90s) and still sounds distinct even with larger 7.62mm weapons such as an M-60/M-240B machine gun or a 5.56mm SAW firing right near to it. The Ranger students couldn’t hear blank 5.56mm M-16 firing in a high winds (we were at FT. Bliss at the time), but a AK or the M-14s and M-60s (7.62mm) oh hell yes.
When I was in Bosnia, Afghanistan or Iraq, you could still tell what shot at you when it comes to an AK series regardless of caliber when compared to out 5.56mm and 7.62mm due to its pitch and tone. Some, if not most, sniper rifles use 7.62mm by the way yet they are as loud either. So once again it is more the weapons internal designs pushing that lead out at you.
I currently own a M-14 and have fired hundreds of different types of small arms in 21 years as a Soldier with 16 years as an infantryman. This is just my opinion from experience and others might quote what they heard from friends or saw on a movie. No matter what all will make you "room temperature" if hit in a vital area especially the way 5.56 and 5.45 tumbles upon contact with tissue and bone.
