Shooting rifles in the military?

in the military do they teach you to shoot with both eyes open (with iron sights, red dot, etc)? Also do you shoot on the move while looking through the sight, or is it more move, take aim, then shoot?

For the Army, you are going to be trained with iron sites using your primary eye. The instructor didn’t stress leaving the weaker eye open or close, as I remember. but it has been a long time. Firing on the move is only going to be trained later, if ever, because you cannot be placing accurate shots on target if you are moving.
IF you can put lead on target with iron sites, you can do it with laser, or other high tech optics too.

I don’t know about the other branches, but the Air Force doesn’t teach you to shoot with both eyes open. At least not with the M16.

I am a Marine, and they way it is done in the Marines is you shoot different courses of fire, table 1 consist of shooting known distances at 200, 300, and 500 yards, they teach you to shoot with one eye closed for this, but if you don’t have to. Table 2 is moving tagets at 100 yards, and kill shots on targets 25 yards and less, this if using iron sights they teach to shoot with both eyes open. Table 3 is turning and shooting the targets at 25 yards and less, and moving toward to engage the targets at 25 yards and less. Table 3 also involes shooting with night vison googles.

depends on the sight. irons we were taught with just 1 eye open. for red dot/holographic sights you shoot with both eyes open.
shooting on the move/reflex firing you dont really look through the sight. if you’re moving while shooting, its supressive fire or very close range. reflex firing is close range… once you spend a couple of weeks with your weapon you really dont need to aim at any target within 75m or so, its just muscle memory. you can train yourself to shoot somewhat accurately while moving, but it takes a lot of range time.

What Alexander said is spot on. With red dot you shoot with both eyes open. Iron sights it’s usually just one. You CAN effectively engage targets while you move if they are at close range. It’s easy to aim at that range! We trained doing that before my first deployment.

The best way to shoot with ANY weapon is with BOTH EYES OPEN… closing one eye removes half of your field of vision. That said I always close my left eye whilst shooting (a bad habit I picked up when I was a teen).
