Why sniper rifles could not be equipped with silencers????

well most rifles that we use, use barrels that could not be fitted with one. the snipers job is mostly intelligence gathering. the break down is like this, 90% information gathering, 10% engaging the enemy. most of our snipers are over 500 meters away, so the bullet will actually hit the target before the sound even gets to them. so why use one? the silencer also weighs down the weapon, making it less accurate. despite what you see in the movies, most snipers will tell you that they wouldn’t use one anyway.
The British Lee Enfield .303. If you saw or used one you would realise it would have been impossible to fit a silencer to it.
Many of the newer ones are. In the old days it would have been hard due to technology of the day versus to what has happened in metals and synthetics since WWII.
there are a few suppressed sniper rifles out there. the problem with supressing a rifle is twofold. 1st the propellant charge in a rifle cartridge is much greater than a pistol so the sound suppressing effect is not as significant as in a pistol round so even though a rifle cartridge can be suppressed its still going to be loud. 2nd, rifle bullets travel at supersonic velocities because the need to be accurate at long range. this creates a sonic boom from the bullet traveling through the air. the sonic boom manifests itself as a loud crack as the bullet passes by. supressors cannot eliminate this loud crack. the compromise solution is to make the bullet subsonic. this however takes away the potential effectiveness of a sniper rifle because it reduces range, accuracy and stopping power. to answer your question there actually are silenced sniper rifles. the M40A3 is made in a supressed version. see http://www.thegunzone.com/m40a3.html
At the range at which you engage targets as a sniper, the noise of the rifle report is not heard down range until after the target has been hit. If necessary a surpressor can be attached to the rifle however in most cases it is not required.
why would you want one in the first place,
the echo, ringing off the canyon walls puts fear into every enemy soldier still standing, especially the ones still standing around the one you just "silenced".
first off (just a technicality), its not a ’silencer’, its a ’supressor’, and second off, look up the M-110 Semi Automatic Sniper System. Its a new sniper rifle being developed by the military…its being tested w/ units in the field right now (apparently its doing very, very well), and will probably be released in large scale military production around 2009. It is (as the name implies) semi-automatic, and a supressor comes STANDARD. It’s effective out to 1,000 meters.
