Screw what anyone else thinks. It’s your gun, have at it all you want!

The anti-sporterized crowd always reminds me of the yuppie scum that seems to be migrating more and more towards our neck of the woods hereabouts. Western NC, Blue Ridge/Smokies. They buy a couple of acres on a mountainside, build their post-modern garbage architecture houses on them, and then start trying to pass zoning crap so the guy who owns the next lot over can’t build *his* house so it won’t "ruin their views". They don’t want to have to actually BUY the damned land so they can keep it pristine….but they want the other guy to do what *they* say with his property.

The way I see it with the scum, here’s a VZ-24….you want to keep it original, buy it from me for $200 and park it in your own closet for as long as you want. I’ll take that $200 and buy another and give you the same option on it, and the next, and the next, and the next. Sooner or later, though, you’re not going to want to buy my rifle from me at my rates and at that point, your opinion stops mattering to me.

If the authenticism freaks want them kept original, let them buy them all they want. What *I* buy is mine and will be cut, carved, machined/drilled, refinished, sporterized to my heart’s content.

You’re right; I have one chambered for .308, and I have ABOUT $ 600.00 in it, including scope ! I love it !

I have a sporter model 98, and it went up in value when the mods were made, of course the mods were made for my grandad in the 50′s and he wanted a mountain gun. The durn thing kicks like a proverbial Tennesee mule and needs some TLC. The old m98′s were about $30 then and the mods another $30. Translate that into oz of silver.

the same gun you are willing to pay $300 for because it has been ‘sporterized’ I’d be willing to pay $800 for had it been left in pristine condition

If your gonna be shooting it and enjoying it I say sporterize it if that is what you want. But if your gonna lock it in the safe and not use it for anything other than a collectors item, The only way it is collectible is unmodified.

What the critics fail to acknowledge is that most of the old military rifles that are being sporterized have little to no value to collectors otherwise these wouldn’t be available to the average guy to purchase. I purchased several VZ-24 Mauser’s at Big 5 for $59.95 each, stripped all the garbage off of these down to the action and now I can sell just the action for more than the rifle was worth. Another example, at a local pawn shop there is a 98 Mauser made by JP Sauer (sp) that has had the barrel cut back and has been over polished and reblued. The owner things he’s going to get $250 for that rifle when it’s only worth about $100 as it sits there.

Some people prefer them Sportsterized and some people don’t.* Either way they are very valuable no matter which way you like them.* There will always be a market for both.* I like mine sporterized just fine and it still has a high resale value, no matter what others say, because some people are searching for them that way.*

"Sportsterized" covers a lot of ground.
    There are ‘teenager-looking -for-a-cheap-shooter `
hack-jobs, (guilty as charged waaaaaaay back when),
and fine custom work including rebarreling by a pro.
Ex-Military bolt actions used to be common and cheap.
The survivors are rare and collectible, if in very good
shape, otherwise, where else can you get a good cheap action?
