    Yes they do.
Had several in Iraq – most (but not all) were captured. (MP5′s etc)
As for actual assigned weapons – it depends on the unit.

The M4 is capable of burst fire, is that close enough for you also the M240 and M249 can be fired full auto.

@dded : All these are issued to units of the infantry

In repy to your question about submachine guns in the military, I served in Vietnam 1970 1971, and mostly all infantry units, including mine we always had a M60 out on missions, M60 is a very bad weapon, dont recall how many rounds per minute , but several hundred for sure

When I was in Korea..we often used "tommy guns"..obtained from fallen Chinese or North Koreans..Many made their way to the U.S. Some had them chrome plated..they are illegal to own, unless the barrel has been wedged. We were issued 30 cal. M=2 carbines which had a little switch to put them on full automatic..We used 30 round "banana clips" There were also 45 cal "grease guns"..but they weren’t as accurate. During the Vietnam war the U.S. began using automatice rifles..they were smaller calibre..& some were prone to jamming.. USMC The BARs were good weapons but heavy to lug around..& drew sniper fire to the carrier.

Well the m60 isn’t a smg (submachine gun),

and not really, see the smg’s do not have the power, accuracy or range of an assault rifle, and only a couple (MP7, P90) have a round suitable for anti-body armour, spec ops use them because they are smaller making them easier to use in CQB, and generally less noisy.

They’re handy in close quarters fighting in urban situations but for most part sub machineguns are not a part of a regular infantry unit’s TO&E. Tankers on the other hand did have SMG’s (2 M3A1′s per M60 series tank).

they never really get assigned smg’s to conventional soliders they don’t really meet the requirements. a infantry platoon with smgs cant defend against a sniper 300 yards away

It’s not usually issued to regular infantryman – as someone has noted, they have a relatively short effective range.

Their accuracy is also limited, and their stopping power fairly weak.

But they do end up in the military anyway – typically security forces.
