Suggestions for best tactical/long range semi-auto rifle?
I would like suggestions for a military surplus AND non-military rifles
In order of importance:
1) cost 1K-2K (including fairly good scope/red dot)
2) great accuracy
3) 7.62 x 51 round (or 308)
4) high cap mag
Muchos Gracias!

Sprinfeild Armory builds a match grade M1 A1 that is a semi-auto variation of the M14.
The box magazines for a M14-M1A1 hold 20 rounds… the rifle if bought new will eat up your budget…
I bet you did not know that the issued sights on that rifle will get you "in the black" past 800 meters once you learn how to use them.
Correct use of the 1907 Pattern US issue sling will do more for you basic marksmanship than optics… instructions can be found at Fulton Arms.com

For a good semi-auto, I’d look at an M1/M14 or a L1A1/FAL. "high cap" and ".308" don’t go well together because of weight, so you’d be looking at 10rd mags.

I am agree an M14, but you should also look into FN FNAR

The US Model M-14 is one of them, but spring for the issue bi-pod, or an exact copy. It makes all the difference firing that beast.

The FN FAL and all of it’s copies and versions

The HK 91/G3/93

DPMS AR10, a good friend has one which we shoot about once a week, along with several other rifles. It’s very accurate, very reliable.
Soviet VEPR, I have one in 7.62×39 and 5.45×39, another good friend has one in 7.62×51, it’s a VERY accurate rifle with a proven action. Might be hard to find one in todays market.
Springfield M14, probably one of the finest battle rifles ever produced in 7.62×51, there are so many options you can get for one now that the possibilities are endless. Match chambers, composite stocks, scope mounts or 1913 rails etc.
FN-FAL, probably the worlds most prevalent 308 battle rifle, the fn-fal and other clones of the HK91 rifle have a reputation for reliability. This is yet another rifle that has recently been given a change of clothes, there’s so many options available now that the possibilities are endless.
Remington 7400 for a semi, or 700 for a bolt action. Excellent rifles with a long reputation for durability and accuracy.
Ruger Number 1, just a beautiful single shot falling block rifle. Very accurate, a lot of fun to shoot, heirloom quality.

If you want a 308, go for a Springfield M1A1 Fully loaded. Stay away from the SOCOM or Scout models. Their long range capabilities are not very good.
Red dot scopes are not really good long range choices. Their dots obscure too much target at longer ranges.
A good AR rifle (not an M4 platform) will also give you what you want only in a smaller caliber. It will be lighter and cheaper than than the M1A1. You can get them with heavy bull barrels, fluted barrels, H-Bar barrels, or standard milspec. All are capable of hitting a man at 500 meters w/ standard ball ammo if you take the time to learn it.

well, well ,well,..so you’re not all idiots, good. M14 is the correct answer at this junction in time, the 50′s are a little heavy but are a tatctical weapon and if you are going for super long range then that would be your choice!

PTR-91 rifle, around $1100
semiautomatic .308 takes FAL magazines
it is accurate
magazines come in 5, 10, 20, 30 rds. c-mag drums of 100rds are available.

Tactically speaking the new Kel-Tec bull-pup rifle chambered in .308 is the best for the money. It takes FAL mags and is small enough to be used for room clearing, the addition of a quad rail system on the forend enables the mounting of all kinds of goodies. Plus it is the ONLY rifle that ejects spent brass right under neither the barrel instead of spitting it a couple meters off to your side. You can easily add an ACOG,or Eotech Holosight, and has amazing accuracy, out to 800 meters. Plus because of the gas vectoring system recoil is kept to a minimum, as well as muzzle climb making for extremely fast target acquisition.
