I'm thinking about buying a Mini-14 or Mini 30 how reliable are these guns and which ammo is cheaper?

It used to be that 7.62 x 39 was cheaper than .223 is that still true! also can I safely use 5.56mm NATO in a mini 14 I know that a .223 and 5.56mm NATO are the very similar but still different, and that 5.56mm NATO is military rated ammo and .223 Remington is civilian. [...]
